          Throwing Star Bolts

Upon George K's recommendation, I have been replacing the Trisquare (dodecadon) bolts that hold the wheel covers on as I convert from the Turbine style to the Throwing Stars. I'm using Stainless Steel M6 20 bolts with Blue Loctite.

After driving with this setup, it appears that the Loctite has bled out and streaked the lip of the wheels.

As I plan on changing the covers back and forth for driving schools, is there a way toprevent this? Should I be using a different type of Loctite?

          Thanks in advance.

Not sure why anyone thinks it's necessary to replace the factory fasteners, but your Loctite "running" problem means you simply applied too much. I suggest cleaning the wheels immediately before the Loctite stains the finish. If you're so inclined, removed the fasteners, clean them, and then apply just a touch (not even a drop) of Loctite and re-install. Let the Loctite set up overnight and you shouldn't have any further problems. Remember, torque limit is 7 - 9 Nm.

          Steve,
I suggested replacing the stock screws, because on my five-years old rims (admittedly winter rims), the triple square have become perfect (rusted) circles even before I took a tool to them.
The second reason I suggested replacing them is because I hate rust and galvanic corrosion, so putting A2 stainless screws with allen heads will prevent me from going through the drilling once more.
          My two cents'worth, George

Agreed you have a point if the car is driven in winter conditions (and maybe even not) because it is easy to strip out the dodecagon head if you're not careful. So far though, I've never had a problem with them though. I live in a snow-free part of the world, and the only time I've had to drill out a M6x20 bolt was when I let a tech at the tire shop "install" the cover. It was apparent he had never used a torque wrench before, but by the time I stopped him it was too late and that bolt was never going to come out. I did the other four myself with him watching.

Thanks for the info. I probably got carried away with the LocTite. I changed the bolts because someone had stripped one of the heads and made it difficult for me to take off the Turbine Cover. Although the rest all came off easily, I just didn't want to risk it. The cost of the bolts was minimal and I figure this is cheap insurance (basically protecting me from myself).

By the way what does 7 - 9 Nm translate to in terms of ft/lbs?

Could any of you point me in the direction on how to acquire the throwing star wheel covers. I'm purchasing a '91 with the turbines and I understand that I can remove them and install the stars. Is this correct?
