        Watched "Ronin" again tonight!!

Well, was over at a buddy's house tonight and "Ronin" was on television - whoaa baby!! The first time I watched that movie was about two months before I bought my M5 - everyone on the messageboard was talking about it so I immediately ran out to the store to check it out. I was even more excited this time - now that I'm an actual M5 owner I could really appreciate the sound, handling, etc. My girlfriend even seemed to get excited. To all of you - go rent it - it's better the second time around.

Sorry, if I'm repeating anything, but I just joined this message board and haven't found anything in the archives.

Thanks to John, I too rented Ronin and my curiosity was piqued. I have doubts that the BMW was a real M5. I got the DVD version and John Frankenheimer, the director (of Grand Prix fame), states that 5 Peugeots and 5 "BMWs" were used for the chase scene. But if you look closely the body "skirts" and front spoiler are missing from the car. Also the Instrument Panel Gauges have white needles.

An obvious techinical goof was the tire that was shot out was mounted ona 535i basketweave style 15" rim not the Turbine Covered 17" wheel.

So, any thoughts on if any of these cars were M5s or not?

I think that there was at least one M5 used, It sure sounds like one when its driven hard. I think they used 520/518s for the demolition though.

        Regards

I only saw the rollover section but I thought the exhaust looked routed along the wrong side

I have seen that movie. Great one ! However, they use an M5 and also another E34 ( sorry don't know which one ). This is why:

        1. The gear knob isn't an ///M one. When she changes to 4 th gear you can see it clearly. Stock E34 gearknob...
        2. No Bmw sport seats. When the camera shows the inside of the car, you can't see the M5 front headrests.
        3. No M5 front spoiler.
        4. No red dials.
        5. Also basketweave style 15" rim not the Turbine Covered 17" wheel as Mark says.

You have to pay attention to see all those little mistakes. My brother didn't find any.

I suppose that they didn't use the M5 for doing dangerous things as it is much more expensive.

If I remember correctly, a few "normal" 5 series were used, and a real M5 was used for still scenes... Nobody would want to crash an M5, even in a movie !

whatever, it was a great car chase scene...one of the greatest...even if it is just the idea of and M5 racing through the streets like that...it gets me pumped up...

        Good driving in the stunts....

I remember watching a program about the making of it.

and although they wanted genuine engine noises they
re~mastered them all in the studio...

I remember seeing the M5 on a ramp and they apparently
removed the cats so the car sounded like a european model...
that's what they said....even though nearly all of them have cats
        anyway !!

Obviously some if the car shots were of different '5's including
the crash scene....surely the budget could've extended to a couple of Fan type "M" rims ??!!!

Anyway even more disturbing is the Peugeot 406.....

It starts life as a "dustbin lid" sounding four pot (2litre turbo
        probably..)

and finishes life as a singing musical V6......

        Very impressive mistake..!!

        enjoy the film,

        ignore the mistakes....

and will someone PLEASE make a film with real engine notes....

        Alan,

According to the directors commentary on the Region 2 DVD, the M5 was taken to a nearby racetrack after filming, as the sounds in Paris were not good enough and effect.

Various recordings of the car passing by and some interior noises were made.

These were then dubbed over the paris scene, so the noises really are an M5, being ragged !! Nice.
