Angry 91 M5 clutch trouble?

i recently purchased 91 E34 M5 blk/gray with 112K miles mint car. i noticed a whining noise when the clutch isnt engaged and disappears when the clutch is engaged. is this a flywheel problem or clutch. also noticed that it doesnt go into 2 gear as smooth as other gears and i think its cause of this...if its the clutch what do you recommend a original bmw clutch or a aftermarket hi performance clutch ...thnx in advance

This may be that typical E34 clutch 'chattering' (whining doesn't describe it for me). It sounds like a throwout bearing noise to me but other more experienced M5'ers have explained it as something else. IF it's that, then it's normal.

My clutch has an additional noise which is probably the beginning of a problem, and that is a sort of munch sound when letting it out fast from a dead start. The previous owner said it needed to be replaced, but I am getting the last bit of juice from it first and it has never once slipped on me in 5 or 6K miles...so why change it, I say.

Second gear is also not a wonderful gear for me (1992 M5) to hit, and took some practice to get smooth. I will probably never be fast into second...I've tried 0-60 and 0-80 tests with my accelerometer and always feel frustrated to not really be fast from 1st to 2nd. If this is what you mean, it's probably typical as well.

Regards,
Bill Klemme
