Replacement for rear shock

My mechanic informs me that the right rear shock aborber in my '92 M5 is leaking and must be replaced.

The BMW part is approx $500!! Can I replace it with Bilstein Sports which cost around $100? Second, should I replace both shocks? Finally, is there related maintanence that makes sense while this is happeneing?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes-you need to replace both with Bilsteins or a similar brand ie.Boge,Koni etc.You will have to eliminate the self leveling system by using oem suspension parts from the 535i-these are sold by dealers and tuning shops like Bavarian Autosport.I believe you can retain the stock springs if you want.I installed shorter Eibachs when I did the conversion about 18 months ago.No more worries about leaking shocks.
