Picked up my silverstone E39 M5 last friday night (17-03-00).Saturday morning i was leaving Montreal for Toronto(1000k round trip) to visit my grand daughter. My first impression:a fantastic car!!! i have been driving for the last 3 years a 97 540A. But last monday(20-3-00)while driving the M5 agressively something unbileveable happened to me.My heart stopped pumping for a few milliseconds...shifting from third to forth gear the stick shift gear "knob"came off loose. My first reaction was to push it back on the stick shift and hoping it would stay there so it did.Has anyone M5 owner go through this terrible experience terrible feeling??? I have an appointement at the dealer next monday for the first 2000k inspection i will ask him to check it & make sure that it does not happen anymore.

There was another report of this same phenomenon at www.bimmer.org (http://www.bimmer.org) on the E39 discussion board. You should definitely get the dealer to take a look at it. Seems they only shove them on there. No glue or screws.

In fact I took away my knob for my M3 today and replaced it with a illuminated one. But the knob is only fastened by friction between the plastic of the inside of the knob and the steel of the gearstick. So just put in on and give it a punck down. If that won't work, ask for a new knob.

HI, guys!!!

Gustav, yes you are so right the gear shift knob is only press fit that's what my dealer told me when i brought the M5 for the 2000k/m inspection.
And the reason why it came loose is because i must of pull on it inlieu of just using the
wivel motion of the stick shift it self.

Thanks for the info.
