I need your advice

I haven't posted on the board for over a year now however I am watching all the time.

My July '00 now has 68k very enjoyable non-abusive miles on it.

Two issues. Recently, I heard a squeek in the clutch pedal. Was informed that it needed a new clutch assembly. I suppose this is reasonable. No?

Also, my car consumed 1qt oil every 1100-1300 miles from day one. Until 40k miles, when I made a round trip from NY to sante Fe. After the trip, oil consumption stopped. Then at approximately 57k it started again (had oil/filter service at about 60k). Should I be concerned?

A Clutch at 68k seems reasonable, but i don't think a squeek in the clutch pedal linkage is certainly indicitave of a bad clutch, may be worth a second opinion.

Oil consupmtion, i wonder if your oil was changed back to 5/30 on your recent service. There seems to be more oil use with the thinner oil, vs the 10/60.

My Jun '00 production car has numerous stickers, warnings and manual information that 10W60 is the only approved oil. I do not know if using the thinner oil is recommended or not. I burn about a liter every 4K miles. From what I have read, this is normal. Your consumption seems on the higher than average side. Can't really give any other informaton than that.

Squeaky clutch pedal is not indicative of a needed "clutch assembly" whatever that may imply. The two devices are hydraulically connected. If when you release the clutch, and it now engages much higher than originally, then probably the clutch has gotten thinner and could be in need of a replacement. Get under the dash and push the clutch pedal and try to locate the squeak. A dash of WD40 should clear that up.

Search for "clutch slippage" and read a whole lot about various techniques for checking if the clutch is slipping, needs replacement or is still good to go. But at 68K miles on the first clutch, that could be a board record.

The oil spec for my 07/00 build has always been 5w30. I have never used anything else.

Is it adviseable to now switch to a heavier oil? And if so, what should it be?
