What nobody wants to think about: New M5 vs. 996TT

Hi
So how do you think the 996TT will stack up against the M5, or vice versa?
What do you think will happen in straight line races? Is it absurd to even mention a comparison in the twisties, or even a track?
The reason I'm asking is beacuse the E60 M5 will cost as much as a used 996TT in my country. This gives me food for thought. In my opinion, it is more acceptable to compare the E60 M5 to a 996TT with BPU's (Basic Performane Upgrade), which are relatively cheap to do, and in my understanding will take the car to about 500 hp.
So the question is: Stock E60 M5 vs. BPU'd 996 TT. How's them apples?
Greetings,
Raul

I wouldn't say it is absurd to mention the twisties. I believe the rumor is under 8 seconds on the ring for the E60 M5 and the 996TT does it in 7:55 give or take a couple seconds. Seems like they might be somewhat comparable as time goes.

Might as well compare an F16 with an M5. The 911TT and the E60 M5 are entirely different vehicles. It takes imagination to include them in the same sentence. If you only need to travel by yourself, or take a single passenger to a restaurant, you'll enjoy the 911TT. The 911TT has the advantage of needing to accomplish so much less.

I think its all matter of what you like and want. I enjoy my 2003 M5 as much as my 2002 996(I know its not TT). I don't think there is any better 4dr sedan out there than M5 for daily driving as well as performance it offers. As far as 996, it is a great weekend get-away car for me and my wife. It is really a totally different driving experiences for each vehicle. Like one says, "it is like comparing an apple to an orange"

At least as far as looks are concerned id have to say th 996 tt. The porsche looks good, sounds good and its still every bit a porsche with no bangle razors sticking out anywhere. As for the M5..... i havent seen one yet so maybe i should hold on to my judgement, but on paper id take the 996 TT if its practical as a 2 door car for U

What about M5 versus Gallardo? Both V10 and both around 500bhp? No, I don't think so - a case of apples and oranges, as with the 996TT. It's not just speed/power but overall chassis, which all of them are clearly different monsters (but good monsters).

I'll be far more interested in M5 versus new Benz CLS 55 AMG and Audi RS6.

It will defunately beat RS6 and will be even with CLS in staraight line....With Galliardo it will be though to beat it...but possible...

Re: What nobody wants to think about: New M5 vs. 996TT

not in a million years would an m5 keep with a tt on the twisties.
In a staright line I think it will be close, but on twisting roads in the uk the tt is catergorically the fastest thing you can buy (yes faster than EVos and souped up Subaru WRXs).ITs the compactness that makes it so formidable.
I would think the m5 will match the Carrera S 997 in terms of performance and lag slightly behind that car on the twisties, and a long way behind a tt.

Re: What nobody wants to think about: New M5 vs. 996TT

The fact that the M5 is even compared to a high-end dedicated sports car like the 996tt is testimony to BMW's achievement. Published reports suggest the M5 will not lag the Porche by much on higher-speed tracks and will likely be a bit faster in straight-line acceleration, especially at higher speeds.

Why wouldn't it keep up, when you look at the lap times of both cars on the 'Ring (of course this is with E60 M5 rumor timings) the times are very close.
