Some more details about M5 from BMW manager

http://nelson.maxieuro.com/BMW_info....small_updates_

Here are some more details from the BMW M-Manager for sales an Orderprocessing in Europe, very kind man.

1) Fog Lamps
They needed to remove them for the cooling of the engine and the brakes.

2) Black inserts in the mirror
The black inserts in the mirror are only for decoration, but the mirror has specific function it will increase the ground effect of the car. That's why they have such a strange shape.

3) The seats
Even the seats have a special function when you are in track-mode and you take heavy turns the side of the seat will be insufflated (ex. when you take a right turn the left side of the seat will be insufflated that the driver and the passenger are better maintained in the seat).

4) M-Button
The specific M-Button in the steering wheel can be programmed individually with several functions like ex: POWER-Function with DSC off and the fastest SMG Mode or or or.

5) SMG
The SMG has the same functions like the well known "old" Smg (Launch-Control and others). New is only that when you are in the manually position Kick-down and the car will shift down one or two gears by itself to overtake. A manual gearbox will not be available.

6) The Power-Button
The Power funtion P500 must be activated by yourself every time you start the car. Comment: This is not to preserve the engine but for the city there is no need for 507 Hp.

7) Official presentation
The official presentation will be at the Mondial de l'automobile in Paris from september 25 to october 10.
If possible I try to be invited to the press presentation in late september for a test drive.

8) Official specs
The official 0-100, 0-200 and V-max are not confirmed by BMW and aren't quite concluded. For the moment they have disscussion about the V-Max (250, 280 or even removing the speed limiter).
His opinion was that the car will be limited again to 250 but he says that it will be as easy like "always" to remove the V-max.
After I said that I've read somethin about 328 km/h, he started laughing and said that this is an easy take for the car.

9) The delivery
Delivery terms are by now late November 04 (Germany and +/- The rest of Europe).

10) M6
For the M6 the car is planed for late spring 05 but it will "only" have 507 Hp not more. The car is quite more agile because of its weight and deeper center of gravity and that's "enough" progression.
For the Moment there will not be an M6 convertible or M6 Csl.

#6- no, the 400/500hp button is for quick diagnostics how agressively the car is driven. you press it too many times- what do you know- your friendly bmw dealer might just deny your warranty

just a random thought

Does this mean that using launch control "too much" will invalidate the warranty - that ridiculous; you'd expect these cars to be overengineered and withstand any amount of regular (non-track) driving.

thats just speculation, and its not true. People keep saying they'll count how many times you do it. I doubt it. Launch control is different, that puts lotsa stress in the clutch and drivetrain. The engine is built for lots more then 500hp. Look at the M3, people would've never thought it could withstand a supercharger, let alone 440hp. You'll have your 507hp to use anytime ya want

ah, but if you ever delved into buidling engines you would know that it is almost impossible to get over the 100hp/liter mark and stay civilized (as it is required in the m5). i think that the engine as it is is build to the hilt and there is very little room for anything. what are you going to do- spin it to 10 grand and hope the tq doesnt fall too quickly so you can eke another 5hp? have you seen a crank for a 5 liter car that can spin to 10 grand? hint- it costs $12000 alone without counting the main bearings (another $3000), conrods ($4500), and an arm-and-a-leg-priced valvetrain and sump pumps for _each_ cylinder... you are pretty much talking a $30k engine- hard to shoehorn in a $80k car.

i think dinan will sell catback and headers for the e60 and thats about it. hell, it took them 4 years to get a blower going for the s62, and the new engine is even more pegged.

but we will see...

i hope the car is a monster.

Re: Some more details about M5 from BMW manager

Well, this from the Edmunds article...

"BMW even claims that the sophisticated SMG system has a fail-safe limiter which senses when you've abused the clutch too much and shuts down the whole system."

Ok, what do they define as abuse? How many launches? And it is possible to get it turned back on?

If the car can determine how many times you have used the LC, and disable the feature automatically, it is not hard to believe that they could do the same with the P500 button. Or, at a minimum if we end up with a M3 style problem, they can use the information gathered from the LC computer, and DME to get information on P500 use and RPM... at combine it all to deny claims.

Re: Some more details about M5 from BMW manager

If they ever denied a warranty claim because you used sport mode in the E39, it wouldnt fly would it? I see the same thing here with the P500. LC is another issue, as when clutches failed in E39's not all were changed, especially those with signs of heavy abuse. Denying a warranty claim made against the engine because P500 was used often is about as absurd as denying a claim because you use WOT when getting on the freeway. Of course though, time will tell...
