Rpm Limiter in 6th gear ??

Does anyone know if there´s a rev. limiter in 6th gear or if it simply stops at the standard 7000rpm ??

What´s the speed at 1000rpm in 6th gear ?

It would hit the governed speed limiter of 157mph before you can reach 7000 rpm in 6th... but for those who got it chipped I would think the rev limiter wouldnt care or know what gear you're in and would still kick in. Just my intuition... to see how close I get to the actual answer...

I don't think Nille has the speed limiter active!

Nille, I've seen 6660-6700rpm and I didn't feel any rev limiter there. However at that speed (315km/h) the accelaration was so slow that a rev limiter could have been activated without me noticing.

Speed at 1000rpm in 6th? No idea, are you trying to calculate theoretical top speed?

Cheers,
/Johan
PS Nille, did you recieve the CD?

Eric is right,

If you get the Dinan chip, you will eliminate the rev and speed limiter. You just have to drive it responsibly after that... don't drink and drive

If the car is properly geared you shouldn't be able to hit redline in 6th. Unless, of course, you're talking about engine mods to dramatically increase top-end HP... at which point you could, which would then imply that your car is no longer properly geared.

Could you then say that if you have removed the VMAX limiter the car would not be properly geared with the Dinan 3.45?

The Dinan chip does not remove the rev limit, it increases limit by 300rpm. Speed limit is removed. Rev limit and speed limit operate independently.

i dont know about the m5, but on most 6 speed cars, the top speed is achieved by redlining in 5th. unleast you shorten the rearend or do some radical engine mods (az greg mentioned) you will not have enough hp to push the car to its top speed in 6th. most 6 speed cars have a final ratio that allows for 250+ mph theoretical top speed

The M5 redlines in 5th at aprox 272 km/h the stock M5's max speed (without VMAX limiter) is 296 km/h, this means that top speed is achieved on 6th. My M5 is slightly modified in I've seen 315km/h on the meter and I have photos of 310 km/h where you can see that the rev is at +6500.

What you write makes perfect sense.

But why did DINAN move the rev limiter up by 300rpm? The engineers at the factory set the limit where they did for good reason, I presume... (since this is software, one can set the limit anywhere they wish).

My guess is that a lot of cars will die early if they get up in that RPM range, but perhaps not all of them. Either that, or one should only be in that range for very short amount of times, and they were afraid of owners who would be doing it all the time? Hmmm....

According to BMW the M5 is limited at 7,000rpm in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th; at 6,800rpm in 5th and at 6,500rpm in 6th.

I know the speed in 6th at 3,000rpm is 140km/h (this is the speed I always cruise at when with my wife in the car), so the speed at 1,000rpm is 46.6km/h (very near 29mph).

This would lead to a final speed (in 6th) at 6,500rpm of 303.3km/h (188.5mph).

Of course this is only an approximation for we do not actualy know the EXACT speeds and rpms we´re talking about: the gauges, and even the BC are far from being exact.

To KNOW the exact figures we have to deal with GEAR RATIOS and with the exact circunference of the particular tyre used in the car. Even then, this would only tell you that theireticaly, IF you were going at certain rpm, you should be going at certain speed, but you wouldn´t know for sure since you´d be reading the same unexact car gauges in trying to confirm them.

This is getting too phylosophical but EXACTITUD IS philosophical...so says Neil Bôhr...
