Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

According to Roundel (the BMW Car Club of America's magazine), BMW will not be making a M6 cabrio.

My own take on this is, with absolutely no other knowledge than what I read in the magazines, maybe BMW will build an M6 cabrio if there is demand and if there is capacity, but its clear it wont debut along side the coupe.

IMHO, its a shame, because open air motoring helps make the experience more immediate, and with the abilities of the vehicle being so high, having some of that experience brought more directly to you is a good thing.

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

Really bad news! I really want the M6 cab, and was thinking it would replace my M3 cab.

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

That would be a shame. Hopefully this information isnt the best, although Roundel usually is pretty good. We'll wait and see (fingers crossed)

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

That seems very strange as there has previously been no anti-cabrio stance. Seems like a big mistake considering the US market. Even here in the UK id say a fair proportion of M3s are cabrio.

The output of the V10 was also quoted as 550 HP in that issue, Jerry. We'll see where that gets us!

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

I spoke to a BMW salesman who is native German, races, and just returned from Germany where he drove in the M5 and M6. He said that:

- There probably will be an M6 cabrio, but significantly after the M6 coupe due to DOT crash testing and other regulatory issues.

- The US-spec M5/M6 will be officially listed at 499 hp due to gas guzzler and other tax/regulation issues, but will actually put out more (512hp was quoted).

- He said that the M6 was an "amazing" performance car whose handling and power will completely blow away a 996tt - not even close.

I didn't think that the gas guzzler tax has anything to do with the hp rating of a car. I thought it was simply based on the epa fuel rating. Its the same reason that the M3 get hit with the tax while the more powerfull corvette doesn't.

Yeah, the Vette "gets around" the tax with the 1st to 4th skip shift.

Does anyone know the requirement(s) that must be met to avoid the tax? What is the minimum fuel economy required?

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

Tom,
thanks for the info.

Its a shame that IMHO BMW did not find a fitting design to match the awesome performance of their vehicles, but thats just MHO.

Re: Roundel says No M6 Cabrio

Well, Roundel isnt always correct. I have a gut feeling they will do it, but as its been stated, it will not hit the market concurrently with the coupe.

My main complaint with the design is the apparent lack of passenger room.
