M5 with Slicks ?

I came upon the website linked below which lists the all-time fastest North American cars based on the 1/4 mile. An interesting mix of old and new ( there are a few notable omissions like the F40 ).

Out of the four cars listed that cracked 11 seconds, only the Enzo was run on non-slicks. There is a 2002 M5 listed at 13.1 - does anyone know how much the 1/4 mile time is generally reduced by running with slicks ?

I am unsure of how much it would be reduced on average because of to many variable, but I know of people on this board who have gotten into the high 12's with street tires. Bluemax, was it you?

I know Elevens broke into the high 12's with a bone stock M5. I beleive that Yupkwundo also broke into the high 12's!!

With the right technique, and practice the M5 can pull some very good numbers at the strip, even though thats not what this car is.

Jason, your right. i have gone 12.61 @114 with a 1.889 60' time.
However as soon as it cools down here in phoenix
it should go in the 12.50 range easy, maybe better. now that i have the ufmotorsport temp kit that you turned us on to. It will break my old numbers. I am afraid that slick's could break some thing in the drive train, thats why i haven't tried them, you could pickup .2-.3 tenths with slick's and a nice bucket of part's too!!

P.s. all my passes are on pilots @ 30 psi.

Bluemax-
What is your launch technique? 12.6 is very very fast for an M5, and I cant tell you how much it pleases me to see a Beast owner who will wring their car out. Was the time taken at Firebird?

Not to steal Bluemax's thunder - he is the undisputed King. But my launch mimicked his advice - rev to 1750 (I had better luck with 2000), quickly release clutch, but don't "side-step", when suspension loads (transfers weight to the rear wheels), FLOOR IT.

Anything else - you either bog, or wheel hop. It's tricky, takes practice.

BmwNut, That time was at firebird, last winter. My launch technique is to deep stage the car and launch at 1850 approx.( depending on traction ) it does take a little seat time to learn how to plant the beast, But with practice anyone can do it.

Bill, Thanks for the new title but i am sure you will run the same numbers as soon as you do some more mod's.

Robert

Bill and Robert-
thanks for the info. The only two BMW sticks I have launched have all been I-6's, and one had the most annoying CDV. The only touchy launching V8 was my old Triumph TR-8, and it was very similar. A quick blip, quick but not brutal clutch release, wait for the drivetrain to load up, and then floor it. Then again, that thing didnt have 400hp and 369ft-lbs of torque. Once again, good to hear you guys love running your cars. Robert, when in the year was that time taken at Firebird? Winter? All the best!

Bill, could you elaborate on what you mean by not "side-stepping"? I was drag strip tonight scoping out the track for a visit next week......BTW, what F and R tire pressures are you running?

Thanks!

It means not slipping your foot to the left in front of the dead pedal so the clutch springs forward. If you "sidestep" the clutch, you are just moving your foot so that the clutch spring moves the pedal back, and the clutch graps with some serious force. Its hard to engage it well like this, and it shocks the drive train too much, and I'm my overpowered V8 RWD car, nothing but tirespin was recieved. To launch a car with traction issues, you need to be nice to it, use easy torque multiplication of the clutch and first gear, and not uselessly spin the tire. Good luck launching the beast!!
