Which Year Bimmer Differentials are Compatible to the E39-M5?

Anyone else who thought about this should really pay close attention to this thread.

I am one of a few owners that is looking for an alternative to Dinan's 3.45 Differential for my 2003 Beast.

Has anyone ever compiled a list ... maybe the word "List" is being too broad, ... of Which Year or Years and Model Numbers of BMW, or other carmakers and manufacturers, of Differentials are Compatible with that of the E39-M5?

What ratio are you looking for?

Any Big BMW Diff aka Typ210, basically that means
Any V8 or V12 powered car with a few exceptions

BMW 733i through 1980, this has the 3.45
BMW E28/E34 M5, they have 3.73 or 3.91
BMW E24 M6 has either 3.73 or 3.91
E46 M3 3.62

The early E32 750iL has a 3.64

Only gotcha is most BMW ring and pinions have 12mm bolts securing the ring gear wheras all the later M diffs uses 14mm bolts (i'm refererinng to the shank). There are special adapter bolts, they have a 14mm shoulder near the top of the head.

OR you can have spacers made for the differential

Another option is to just use a Quaife which has the 12mm holes.

Jeff

I just opted for a 3.64 ratio Quaife centre which was fitted to a genuine M5 diff housing and is shipping as we speak to me.
That way you can choose which ratio you want:
3.45/ 3.64/ 3.7 or 3.9!

Max:

Regarding this 3.64 Quaife ... What did you have to supply to the company that put this differential together?

If we may ask ... Who built this 3.64 Quaife for you?

What may be some of the pitfalls upon installation, if any?

Is therre any type of warranty or guaranty that either comes with this Quaife ... AND/OR ... Does it nullify any portion of your existing BMW warranty?

I had the diff built by bimmerworld.com

Quaife does off a limited lifetime warranty, even with tracking the car!

Purchashing the diff in the States and living in Australia, the BMW warranty is changed and as such; as usual with these mods I am up for any problems.

Quaife is an austrilian company, they sell for $1295, if you get one, than the "gotcha" with the 12mm/14mm bolts is a NON issue.

Thank all you need is the ring and pinion set and the quife and a competent installer.

BTW, the shop I use is building a 3.45 for another board member. They were surprised to see how worn the bearings are and are replacing all the bearings.
