E39 540 Sport Nitros Oxide Kit

Geday & greetings all from the land of Oz. After much research on supercharging my 2000 E39 540 Sport I have come to realize that its simply not worth it, around 25k aus. So I have purchased a ZEX 125 HP Nitros oxide kit which is almost ready to go however I require info on the ECU to complete the Installation.
Does anybody out there have access to such information ?. i.e tacho output, throttle position return etc etc.
Also I would like to fit a set of headers to compliment the nice twin system that MIB fitted to it when he owned it and am looking for suggestions on which would be the best one to get.
Next on the shopping list is a cold air intake... suggestions anyone ?.
I would also like to improve the brakes without spending a small fortune and wonder if anyone can recommend any way to achieve this.
Lastly but not least I am looking for ECU programming software where my Local tappet head HP Guru can play and try different settings and set the thing up for the best possible parameters ie ignition settings and auto transmission valve body pressures and gear change set points.

Once completed I will be posting photos, Dyno/street results and how to information should anybody be considering the same thing.

Cheers and thanks in advance

Hey Chunky,

I see you've got Emma on laughing gas.

If you want a nice improvement to the Brakes without spending a fortune, upgrade the lines to S/S and upgrade your pads to Axis ultimate, and upgrade your Brake fluid to Motul 600. This will give you a nice improvement for very little coin. From their, if you can outdrive that setup, you'll have to spring for a BBK. 4 corner setup like mine is about $5K USD but you can buy just the 2 wheel front kit for about half that, and just change the rear to as above.

DaveZ from Zeckhausen racing is the man to speak to about brakes.

As far as CAI, you can spend a little bit of money in Australia for Zero gain, or you spend quite a bit on the Dinan setup for a small gain. It depends on where you are headed. The Dinan gear has a lot of hidden benefits that make the car strong in all situations.

We have just finished putting a 100 shot of Gas on an VP SS commodore. Stroked with dual throttle bodies. We were supposed to run it on Wed but it rained. My mate is trying to compete with the Beast. If it all goes well, I'll give you the details of the guy that hooked it up.

Headers are harder because of RHD. A few guys in Sydney have had them done.

Sofware by Powerchip. Wayne Besanko is the guy you need to email.

Rob Bliss , Robinson road Geebung, did the custom exhaust. I never asked the question about Headers.

Regards MIB. P.S. Emma is TiSi.

Thanks Mark

Thanks for the info, I'l deffinately do the brakes with the little coin solution first and will probably end up fitting bigger brakes at the front in the future.
W'ere having some problems with the gas installation and we need a tacho output from the ECU to activate the rpm switch which is preset to only allow No2 after 3000 rpm. This rpm can be preset to any rpm and is fitted in addition to the kit in an effort to preserve the transmission.
We are also having difficultlys finding a voltage output at the ECU for throttle butterfly position. the only voltage we can find varies from 0.5v to about 1.5v where we need at least 3.5v to 5.0v.
In any case we have been short on time so this week we will sort it out somehow.
Do you know if Powerchip have a transmission software upgrade equal to Dinnan's ?.

Hey Chunky,

are you going to run it down the Quarter Mile?

It would be great to see the times with the Laughing gas.

You should come close to the Beast with that. At a guess I would think maybe 13.4?

No they don't have anything EQUAL to Dinan's. All of the Powerchips Software is Superior.

Software is the only thing that Dinan Lacks in. They really need to update it.

So Chunky, did you install the kit?

how long does a bottle last?
do you like it?
How noticeble is the difference?
are there any downsides?

I found no kits for 540 on zex ...

Sorry for the delay

Yes I finally have finished building & interfacing the custom electronics controller and it works a treat. Have only just completed it and am in the process of fine tuning and getting dyno results which I will post online. All in all its excellent and can be used without the nitros where fuel only is added at 3500 rpm.........what a transformation. With the gas im expecting high 11 sec 1/4 mile to low 12's using the 125 hp jets.
In any case all will be revealled soon and the kit/controller will be available worldwide.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers Chunky

Hey Chunky,

Congrats on giving Emma the laughing gas.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but Emma was a 14 Second car, so with the GAS I belive you will be in the Mid to Low 13's.

You should be almost as quick as a beast.

To run low 12's you need a 150 shot on a Beast. JMO.

Yoda's last run was 13.3 @ 105.5. If you can beat that with Emma than you have done incredibly well. Good luck.

I have a friend with a VP commodore. He has the 355 Stoker kit and a lot of work. He has 400Hp at the flywheel and was running 13.6. He put a 100 Shot of NOS on and is consistant low 13,s.

He has 13.0 and 13.1. Only once when conditions were right, and he did a great run he ran 12.66. He has never seen a 12 again since.

I think you should be happy with 12.99. Unless you have opened the mtor and done a lot of other work.

Chucky,
I'd be interested where you got your signals from. I also have a 2000 540/6 on Nitrous. 50 HP shot right now.
I am guessing you have an auto, which is why you are looking for a 3000RPM signal.
I'm going to build a progressive controller so I can go higher, as I don't think the clutch can take a direct 75HP shot from the start.
I have posted 2 pictures of my installation in the photo gallery. I guess it will take a few hours for them to get approved.
I am using a "wet" kit that I bought from NOS.
OS asked how long the bottle would last. A 10 Lb bottle at 125 HP would last about four 1/4 mile runs!
There are 15 pound bottles available.

Regards,
Jim Lev

Doesn't ZEX handle the throttle position "out of the box" ???

Yes it does but only analouge voltages and the BMW uses PWM (pulse width modulation) which needs to be converted back to an analouge voltage that the ZEX controller can understand. I have gone through 2 ZEX controllers so far an I suspect they cant handle the heat under the hood. I am seriously thinking of removing the kit as I only get about 100 secs of fun for $100 bottle (10LB) of NOS.

Bottom line is I enjoyed the challenge of making it work and when it works it kicks arse. Think I'l get a real M5 and play with that with some forced induction
