Do I Let My Husband Drive My M5? And Other Things Done For Love--Of CARS

Before I answer, let me tell you about the husband. He is a skilled, self-taught, shade tree mechanic. This I learned early on, when I came home once and saw him standing IN the engine compartment of his car. That, and the many hours I put in as expert flash light holder, parts aligner, parts orderer and returner. Echoes of “depress, release” uttered during brake bleeding sessions still ring clear. And he is extremely picky (grouchy) about how things are done, often redoing some of the work done on cars when they come back from the shop. Or, for example expecting me, when washing the car in 28 degree f temps, to be using the two buckets (filled with cold water only) for washing above and below the beltline method of car washing (not going to happen)!!!

And having more than one car nut together can foster a less than mature and rational vehicular lifestyle. Some of our recent activities have included driving side-by-side down the highway with walkie talkies in each of our cars used to synchronize gears and shifts to see which cars are the fastest (results still pending!) or the battle of the M cars— to see who can drive which one the fastest (I keep taking the lead and don’t intend to lose it). How about owning 7 cars and 3 or 4 motorcycles at once—we did it a few years back. And where did we keep the vehicles? Well… our garage is located under our house, in the basement (we live on the hill so the garage is on the exposed side). We have a 3 car garage, but thought that we could open a wall and expand further into the basement to increase storage. After finder a sympathetic builder/designer/car nut, that’s just what we did. Basically our basement can now hold 5 cars, numerous MC’s ‘, etc. And yeah. I get to sleep just about completely above my M5 (I swear a few times I’ve woken up in the night and thought it was making sounds down there)

All told though, I actually think I’m easier on the equipment, drive more and may even be a better driver then he is (in my mind)….

…..so, to answer the question , yes I allow him to drive it. But I have to admit, rather unkindly, that I sort of hate it when he does though. It’s my car!! I feel like I have to keep an eye on everything he does while driving!!

Happy Valentines Day!! Give those cars (and of course loved ones) a nice smooch.

Greco540,
Sorry, no sisters. Although I do have two brothers, one who is out there looking. Maybe we should start a matchmaking service to bring together all the car nuts.

Great post, Anita. Wish I could find a wife like you!

Nice to see someone else out there with both a Mustang and an M5!

I'm expecting my car this weekend....LMB/Caramel!

Anita,

Interesting story. I am glade my wife does not get into this site and read these stories. Now with yours here, I definitly don't want her here!

Have you perfected that flashlight holding thing yet?! I couldn't resist. Wow, two car nuts in one family. What happens when its time to go on a trip? Do you flip to see who drives?

I know, your going to semi-flame me, but I don't get the opportunity too often here to respond to stories like this. What type of Valentines do you give each other? Candy in the shape of car keys? OK, I'll stop.

Good story though,

Mark

Anita, You and your husband are truly lucky people to have found each other. I'm working on the girlfriend...she's ready to order an M3 for herself, and has owned a bike (Triumph Daytona...YUMMA!). Plenty of room in my garage for all the toys
