At the end of 2003, BMW will facelift the X5. Some cosmetic and engine changes.
Expect to have new 4.4L engine from 745 which will produce 325 instead of old 286hp engine that doesn't have valvetronic technology.
Also 4.6is engine will be upgraded to 4.8 producing more than 370 hp. Expect to have more power from 3.0L diesel engine, too since 330 cd will have 205 hp and the same engine in 730d has 218 hp and 500 NM of torque.
So after the facelift 2 more years and expect to have the next generation in 2006.

Thanks. I am thinking about buying an X5 and an important factor in my decision is whether they will continue to hold their incredible residual values, which will obviously be affected by a new version being rolled out. Any thoughts out there on whether or not the X5 will continue to hold its value better than just about any other car out there?

I think release of X3 in 2004 will end increadible residual values on X5 since X3 will be only 11,7 cm shorter and will be a newer car with a lighter curbweight and more sportier drive thanks to lower center of gravity. Actually I'm thinking of buying an X3 3.0L diesel when it is released.

X5 is so popular, you have to wait 6 months to get one. I heard that last year some owners sold their X5s at a price more than they paid. However after the facelift things might change.
If you are looking to buy an X5, I would advise you to wait for the facelift. Which engine do you want to have?

Looking at the 3.0d Sport. Can't really buy a bigger engine since insurance would be sky high for someone my age. Would like to wait for the facelift, but really need the car by June. Sounds like the facelift will not happen until after that.

You may have to wait a little longer than June for the facelifted model.
But I think the wait will worth it. With the upgraded 3.0L diesel engine, it will be 205 hp instead of 185.
I have tested Range Rover 3.0L diesel and that very same engine has 177 hp in RR. With the curbweight of 2,5 tons (5500 lbs), car didn't drive as it should do.

I guess cosmatic changes and more powerful engine will motivate you to wait longer. IMO 3.0L diesel is the best engine option for a SUV regardless of insurance costs for your age.
Very good choice. Good luck with the wait.
