RACED A DIABLO WITH MY BEAST - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

ON MY WAY TO WORK TODAY ON I-75 AKA.(ALLIGATOR ALLEY) I NOTICED IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR A BRIGHT PAIR OF HEADLIGHTS APPROACHING ME AT THE (GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL) SPEED. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A C-5 VETTE. I ASKED THE OTHER TWO PEOPLE IN THE CAR WITH ME IF THEY WANTED TO HAVE A LITTLE FUN. WE HADN'T EATEN BREAKFAST YET SO A C-5 VETTE SOUNDED PRETTY TASTY AT THE TIME. WITHIN ABOUT 10 SECONDS THE CAR HAD COVERED THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US AND PULLED UP ON OUR RIGHT SIDE. TO ALL OF OUR SURPRISE THE CAR IN QUESTION WAS NOT A VETTE, BUT A LAMBORGHINI DIABLO. THE GUY DRIVING THE DIABLO WAS FORCED TO SLOW DOWN DUE TO A SEMI IN HIS LANE. I GUESS HE THOUGHT HE HAD ENOUGH ROOM AND SPEED TO PASS ME IN THE RIGHT LANE. WELL GUESS WHAT? HE THOUGHT WRONG. AFTER DOWNSHIFTING INTO 3RD GEAR I WAS ABLE TO BOX THE GUY IN AND FORCED HIM TO GET BEHIND ME IN ORDER TO GET AROUND THE SEMI AND ENJOY THE MILES OF OPEN ROAD AHEAD. AFTER I PASSED THE SEMI THE DIABLO QUICKLY PULLED UP BESIDE ME GAVE ME A QUICK LOOK AS TO SAY YEAH RIGHT KID. THE DIABLO DOWNSHIFTED AND SMASHED THE GAS. AS I HEARD THE INCREADIBLE SYMPHONY OF MUSIC THAT ONLY 12 CYLINDERS CAN PRODUCE, I DECIDED TO THROW IT DOWN A GEAR AND LET THE BEAST EAT. WE BOTH STARTED TO ACCELERATE FROM ABOUT 90 MPH, AND TO ALL OF OUR SURPRISE, THE DIABLO DID NOT PULL AWAY AS HARD AS I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT. THE OTHER TWO PASSENGERS IN MY CAR WERE DUMBFOUNDED THAT THE DIABLO DIDN'T SCHOOL US THE WAY THEY THOUGHT IT SHOULD. WE GOT UP TO ABOUT 145 MPH BEFORE SEEING THE BRAKELIGHTS COME ON FROM THE DIABLO. HERES THE BEST PART, FROM 90 MPH TO ABOUT 145 MPH THE DIABLO WAS ONLY ABLE TO PULL ABOUT 4 TO 5 CAR LENGTS ON US. AS A MATTER OF FACT WE WERE SO CLOSE TO HIM THAT WE COULD SEE THE CONFUSSED EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH THIS GUYS MIND. BEING AGRESSIVELY CHASED BY A 4-DOOR DAILY DRIVER CARYING 3 EXECUTIVES TO WORK. THE GUY SLOWED DOWN AND GOT OFF AT AN EXIT THAT DEAD ENDS INTO THE EVERGLADES. I MEAN THERE IS NOTHING ON THIS EXIT EXCEPT A ROAT THAT IS ABOUT A HALF MILE LONG. NO STORES, NO RESTROOMS, NO HOUSES, NO GAS STATIONS, NOYHING BUT SWAMP LAND, ALLIGATORS, AND A 1/2 MILE OF PAVEMENT.I WONDER WHY HE GOT OFF ON THAT EXIT? MABY HE WAS EMBARRASSED THAT HIS BEAUTIFUL CAR WAS UNABLE TO SCHOOL ME THE WAY HE THOUGHT IT SHOULD, OR MABY HE JUST STOPPED TO TAKE IN THE SCENERY.IM NOT SURE, ILL LET YOU BE THE JUDGE. NOW PLEASE DON'T MISUNDERSTAND, I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT AN M5 CAN BEAT A DIABLO. I REALISE THAT EVEN THE MOST TRICKED OUT M5 HAS ITS LIMITATIONS, HOWEVER IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT YOU'RE VERY CLOSE TO THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

Hope you and your friends enjoyed a hearty breakfast afterwards and gave the beast a pat on the back or hood. I'll bet the Diablo dude stopped to examine his engine to see if all 12 cylinders were working. What color was the diablo?

THE COLOR OF THE DIABLO WAS A DEEP RED, ALMOST A VIOLET OR WINE COLOR.

Eric,
thanks for the entertaining story. Yep, the M5 is one great ride. I was thinking of that this morning- that BMW mixed in the right amount of everything to make the M5 either a fantastic sports sedan or a luxurous daily driver. One pointer- on these forums, when you use all-caps it is considered shouting. I dont blame you for wanting to shout about that story!

maybe that guy pulled on to the dead end to dump that junkmobile in the mud and collect the insurance to get a M5!

Ricardo, Let me clarify on my cobra. The car is a remanufactured superformance cobra built in South Africa. It is titled with the DMV as a 1965 however the car was built in the factory 2 years ago. IT is not a kit, it is a replica. I have about $85,000 total investment in the car.When I got the car delivered, it came without the engine and tranny. We installed a 5 speed tremec racing tranny. As for how we achieved 600+ hp. I purchased a ford 460 svo crate motor dyno@560 hp.(fully rollerized)Alluminum fly wheel, Aluminum Cobra Jet heads,monsterous cam, Polished Victor Jr. intake, Demon Race carburetot with adjustable sleeves (900 cfm ?) 11.5:1 compression.MSD ignition. The car uses massive amounts of fuel and runs on 113 VP. My cobra runs the 1/4 mile in 11.8s. As for racing stories, I can honestly say that I've raced just about everything street legal and I have never been beaten (on the street) At the track I've had my teeth kicked in, but thats a totally different arena. I'm sure however that I will eventually meet my match on the street.Just for the record, my cobra would demolish a Diablo from 0-150. AS soon as i figure out how to post pics on the internet I will show some pictures of the cobra, 1/4 mile time slips, and the mods that I've done to my 2001 titanium m5.
