Movit or Brembo brakes ?

Can you guys help me out here ? Im planning ahead to buy some braking power for my Supercharged M5 but i can't make up my mind.

I was considering Stoptech, Brembo, and Movit but now i decided to narrow it down to Movit and Brembo. i can't make up mind now to gun for which of the top two. I have made some research and got to know that Movit uses 325mm 993 TT brakes and the Brembo's use 355mm. The Movit's price has recently gone down from $2,900 to $2,300 and Brembo's sale price is $3,400. I also know that Movit have less brake pedal travel when applying brakes, which i like, but im not sure about the Brembo's. Brembo has the name but that comes with a $1,100 premium and on the other hand you can get Movit with Porsche calipers which in my opinion isn't a good idea!

All in all, this is the case and i can't make up my mind. So can someone help me in making a decision please ? Thanks in advance.

Movit. Don't even think twice. The most important thing a brake rotor needs to do is manage heat. Porsche (whose parts Movit uses) spends more on R&D here than most, and their rotors have the best cooling vent design. I've never heard of Porsche rotors cracking, although I've heard many stories of Brembos cracking.

Hi

My two cents...

I drove a Brembo'd M5 and I liked it...this kit requires the use of a wheel spacer...that I do not like.

I have the Stoptech kit with Pagid blue pads...pedal modulation is better than the Brembo kit.

The stopping power of either kit is awesome though, I highly recommend the use of a big brake kit...preferably Stoptech.

Black M5,

The Movit kit purchased from Steve D at The Ultimate Garage is definitely the way to go. This was the first mod I did to my M5 and I love the way the car stops on a dime, repeatedly. The Movit kits for the front and rears are of high quality and it shows the moment you open the box. I've also said on a previous post that working with Steve D is awesome as he cares about customer service (one of the few left who do!). To take it even further, I emailed the owner of Movit (a fellow named Guido in Germany - seriously!) with questions relative to the install and he got right back to me ASAP. A class act all the way around although you do pay for it!

It's also a hoot to note people's reactions when they see the big red calipers with the Porsche lettering behind the M5 rims. Takes alot of folks by surprise!

Another point to consider, perhaps, is maintenance. I would think w/ the Mov'it kit you'd be able to get either part or service at most any Porsche shop. I don't know if that can be said of the others.

Anybody have any data on stopping power differences? I'd be surprised to see an improvement... M5 numbers are already extremely impressive.

you should able to do a lot better than $3400 for the brembo kit. i too have been looking at all 3 big brake kits. i have a number of quotes substantially less than that figure. send me a PM if you want specific info.

note that the movit kit has both front and rear kits so the price will be not just $2300 but will be approx. $4600. i believe that ultimate garage is recommending and dave z are both recommendating front and rear movits. brembo only has the front set.

since i am in the market, i would like to hear about specific instances of brembo problems. brembo is very well respected and makes brakes for some of the best, most exotic cars in the world.

stoptech does a very good job of marketing. i am however concerned about their financial staying power since they are a new company and i am uncertain as to its capitalization. brembo and movit presumably have much deeper pockets--which is a major consideration if something ever malfunctioned.

just my .02 worth. however any feedback and comment from brembo, stoptech and movit users would be greatly appreciated.

I'm confused...Porsches are outfitted with Brembos out of the factory..so you're saying that Movit uses Brembo parts?

I think that Brembo is the OEM supplier of rotors. Porsche just puts their name on the rotors. Also, some of the "holes" in the rotors are either drilled or preformed. I think porsche has them preformed.

Check out the FAQ section of the ultimate garage.

I have both setups. My race prepped 88 M5 has the Movit kit with the 993 GT2 Turbo brakes in the front and the Boxster S brakes in the rear.

My F355 Challenge car has 14 inch Brembo's in Challenge form but prior to the car being converted into a Challenge car, it had a Brembo set that consisted of F40 brakes on the rear and F50 brakes on the front (same kit you are referring to I believe).

The Movit kit is very nice and works well, especially when cold, which is what you need for street driving. That beings said the F40/F50 Brembo set offered more performance but you get what you pay for. The Movit set front and rear costs me $5000 while the Brembo set cost $7000.

In terms of maintenance the Movit kit requires less and will last longer in terms of pad and rotor replacement.

Keep in mind when talking to different Brembo owners that Brembo makes a vast variety of different kits so you may not all be talking about the same caliper and rotor setup.

The difference between my F40/F50 brake kit from Brembo and the Challenge brake kit is almost $4000 and the performance between the two is quite different. The F40/F50 setup was slightly better than the Movit kit (probably not worth the extra money) but the difference between the Challenge kit and the other two is like night and day. the Challenge kit is the same exact brake setup that the Ferrari 333 SP prototype's used in winning the 12 hours of Sebring and the Daytona 24 hour race in 1996.

All in all, for street use and easy maintenance I would go with the Movit kit unless you track you car on a regular basis or the Brembo kit drops in price.

You can see pictures of my 14 inch rotors at the link below.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Jon

Damn, Jon... that's really sweet. I'll be your neighbors love you when your fire her up! When I was a kid I lived a few blocks from where Shirley Muldowney (Cha-Cha) had her drag beasts worked on... I'm sure a bit louder than your Ferrari, but nonetheless popular w/ the neighbor folks.

Black M5,

The Movits are actually 332 mm instead of 325 (I think that's the rear). Brembo makes Porsche's brakes. If you look on Ultimate Garage's web page, they state that Porsche specifies larger bolts and other things to make the calipers sturdier.

The rotors have the holes cast in, not drilled. Additionally, Porsche has thoroughly researched the venting in the rotors. I am told that a smaller Porsche rotor can dissipate more heat than a larger rotor from another company.

Can anyone comment on the larger Brembo's rotors and the tendency to shimmy with our crummy bearings? There may be a greater risk with a larger disc. David Z-can you help out here?

Lastly, you can get replacement parts easily at Porsche dealers.
