What is an L6?

The other day in lil' ol Charlotte I saw an L6. At first I thought it was a 635i with different wheels but then I saw an L6 badge on the trunk. It had Alpina turbine spoke wheels. Did Alpina do a version of the 635i? Was it sold in the US? Anyone have the details?

BMW actually made the L6; it's not an Alpina version. There are Alpina 6ers, though, which are Alpina B7s. The L6 is, from my understanding, the luxury version of the 6 series. Instead of calling it a 635CsiL, it was called the L6. There's an L7, too. I believe that after the L7, BMW switched to 7##iL.
In short:
6 anything = good
L6 = good in a nice kind of way
M6 = good in a fast kind of way

the L6 has a smaller engine than a 635csi, it weights quite a bit more, and has a full leather interior (ie everything, inc. headliner, console, etc.) is all leather

Actually the L nomination on the E32/38 is for Long. The body is stretched 11cm behind the Bpillar. 740i/740iL wheelbase is 4910mm/5024mm. Same luxury level, but more legroom for the rear occupants. In Europe there is an L7 model as well which stands for Limo.

Check out this one on Mobile

E38 L7 are "really" long.

Back to the E23 and E24s, they have the same motor as thier 635csi and 735i counterparts, but they have leather door/dash/console cladding. They also had rear air conditioning and a couple of other goodies that I can't remember off the top of my head. The leather dash is always a problem as the leather shrinks over time if not taken care of, and the leather will lift on the dash. If really bad the stitching will fail as well... Looks pretty nasty.

Great, I have been wonder what an L6 was for about three weeks. I saw one at a local upscal Itilian resturant, and did not know what to make of it.
