European Delivery of M5

Have ordered a 2003 ... awaiting a February build slot and a tentative March delivery. With a 7% savings, am considering doing a Euro delivery and giving my wife a short vacation rather than putting the MSRP in the local dealer's pocket. I believe I can also order the sunshades with the luxury interior there. Can anyone share their experiences good or bad?

Go for it. I picked up my car from Brussels and we had a blast. Bear in mind, however, that what you save on the car your wife may spend on shopping

Okay just checked the BMWNA site, and the Mcars are once again MIA. (Whew!! Thank God!! Or I am gonna be pissed )

Back to the topic of Euro Delivery, Yes!! definitely go for it!! albeit the 7% discount does not currently apply to the Mcars. I am big fan of it, been doing ED almost on an Annual basis since I first discover it 3 years ago.

Gee guys ... real sorry for wasting the bandwidth ... I took for granted M cars were available ... my apologies. Wife may force me to do both now. This could be expensive for her to "even" the tally for my M5 ...

Go for it! Cheap tickets to Europe in Winter anyway. I did M3Cic SMG in January this year - with blasting trip south to Rome and back though Germany (could open it up on way to London on Autobahn) and Belgium.
Germany - Austria - Italy - Switzerland - Germany - Belgium - France - UK in 10 days

M5s are available via Euro Delivery, but (at least as of two years ago, when we did ours) there was no 7% MSRP cut, and (unlike non-M models) you still had to find a dealer who had an allocation.

Do it anyway, you'll love it.

Euro Follow-up

Thanks for everyone's update ... yes, there is no savings as with other models. I am still waiting for my dealer to verify an allocation. They are really starting to get difficult to find. They are looking to trade another dealer at this point if necessary. I think there are many like me who are looking right now due to the model change. My dealer has assured me they will get me one one way or the other. They don't want to lose a $7K mark-up ...

Euro delivery is the only (the ONLY) way you will ever be able to freely experience the M5 in the environment it was designed for - the Autobahn. You will be able to run at triple digit speeds for sustained periods of time. This is impossible in America, at least if you prefer not to spend time in jail.

It's legal and proper in that context. And it is an outstanding experience. BMW also offers a driving class for the car. The one I took was great and is highly recommended. Uber steuer oder unter steuer? Das is die fragge.

I also suggest buying the German license plate for longer than the normal period of time; I believe that 6 months is the max. Find a dealer there or some other location to store the car so you can go over more than once. May is the best - post spring break and pre summer rush, and the weather is usually fine, or at least fine enough.

The Bavarian Autobahns offer the best open road driving in my experience. Fewer trucks and less population density (relatively speaking of course) there makes for generally more time for schnell fahren gehen.

A trip to the Ring should be considered. Or a pilgrimage I should say. The opening times can be found here:

http://nuerburgring.de/eng/frame_04.htm

Anyone who buys an M5 and *doesn't* take Euro delivery completely misses out on what the car is: a high (really high!) speed executive sedan designed for the task of Autobahn Sturming.

So do it.

Excellent post about the meaning of Euro Delivery, Herr Moose! So glad I took German this year. I understood your German phrases well.

"Uber steur oder unter steur? Das ist die fragge."

With ///M-Power, a 6-speed manual, and a console-mounted hand-brake, you can do both.

Go for a European Delivery

I have picked up Porsches, Mercedes, and BMWs in Europe (see my website: bmwtour.com ... a thinly disquised promotion for BMW European delivery, and travel in Europe). All three dealers I talked with in SoCal would do it. No savings, however.

I ordered my M5 (built on April 1, 2003), but I was in the UK at the time. (I know, I could have gone to Munich!)

BTW, I love the car (5 + months old and 14,000 + miles). And, I own 3 other BMWs and a Porsche. (One ought to have fun in retirement!)

If you haven't been to Europe (and the Autobahns), you should go ... don't waste time getting there. It's not that expensive these days!

The dealer here has a new 2003 M5 in Carbon Black in their showroom if you are interested in taking delivery of one right now. Just thought I would let you know. Good luck!
