Simple, effective oil fill funnel

This is an old trick - I didn't invent it. But I got tired of dribbling a little oil down the engine when I added a quart. I now use this system - it fits the oil fill hole perfectly. I still put a towel there "in case" but I have never spilled a drop using this. After you've poured in most of the oil you can invert the bottle and it will rest in this funnel to completely drain without falling over (unless you're in a stiff cross-wind, i guess.)


And its free! Note you can store the funnel in the remainder of the old bottle so the last of the oil drains out of it, and you can use the cap to keep it from dripping as well.

Be careful not to let any thread from the towel get into the engine.

I pour "commando" without a funnel or anything. Unless it's windy I don't spill a drop. If it's windy, even with a funnel things can get messy. Maybe it's easier with the flatter "BMW" 5w30 quarts than the squarish castrol you picture ?

I pour with the flat side down, not with the bottle up on edge like the little picture on it shows. Once it's halfway empty I can just turn it upside down to drain in the filler while I open the next quart. Does that make sense or should I shoot a video clip next time I do an oil change

That's a good trick. Unfortunately I already bought a $.99 funnel.

Another thing, when I add oil, my engine is usually hot, so I wouldn't want any plastic part touching the engine.

I've used this w/ hot engine - no problem. And as for commando pouring - you must have better aim than me. I used commando mode for a long time, and I rarely spilled - but every once in a while a teaspoon or so went to the wrong place.

I buy my oil (Mobil-1) at the local Mobil station. I keep a quart wrapped in plastic in one of the trays under the carpet. The gas station also has paper funnels -- I grabbed a handful and keep those next to the M Mobility kit under the plastic trays.
