Question on Oil Change??

I had a question on the amount of oil during oil change. The last time I had the dealer change my oil, they over-filled it (They put 7 quarts and change in) Now, I want to take my own oil in for the next change (Mobil Syntec 5w-30). Does anyone know how many quarts I should give to the dealer? Should I give them 6 quarts and add any increments myself at a later time??

Reza:

Are you sure 7 quarts was overfilled. My 540 takes 7.5 quarts, I would think the M5 would take a little bit more, maybe 8? Am I completely off-base here?

According to the 2001 manual, p. 187, the capacity is 6.9 U.S. quarts with a filter change. Maybe last time they didn't drain it properly? Anyway, I always to fill it to one quart less than capacity, then check it with the dipstick before putting in the last quart. That way, if I didn't get it all out, I can judge how much to put in out of the last oil can. It's a bit tricky with the M5 however, since the check procedure requires engine start up and run, then a check after 1 min. after shutdown. Am I hurting the engine starting it shy a quart? Maybe, but probably not.
