Help! - Considering the Dark Side!

I saw a TT accelerate onto an onramp 2 w/e's ago and I just can't get it out of my brain! I thought I would never get anything more than my M5, but now sometimes I feel that I'm driving a boat. (Albeit, one hell of a boat!) I've never owned a 'true' sportscar and I feel that perhaps I should get it out of my system now.

My dilema: I'm #6 on my dealer's M6 wait list. I could easily be happy waiting and deciding in a couple of years on whether to jump into the M6. However, IF the TT is the car for me, why not get it now (my rationalization)?

The question for you: Which would you choose, the M6 (assuming the rumors of V-10, 500 HP) or the TT? I realize you have to form an opinion without having ever seen or driven the M6, but so do I right now.

I would love to hear some reasons to NOT get the TT and get it out of my system for the time being. I know it will be coming in the future in the form of either the TT or M6, but right now I'm fixated. FYI, I'm 34, single, no kids and I don't really need the space of my M5 although it is nice to have the ability to carry around 4 people. My M5 (and it's potential replacement) is a 'fun' car or 'date' car and not my daily driver. I actually never take it to work as I like to keep it confidential to avoid jealousy.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Chris

Hmmm . . . reasons to NOT get the TT . . . let's see now . . .

Nope, can't help you there. I tried too.

I also don't take my ride to work for the same reasons as you. I'm a consultant and really don't need the grief. But, seems we have much in common. I'm 30, (not single), no kids, didn't need the space, and had a different car for a daily driver.

Good luck with your dilemma!

BMW and Porsche makes different types of cars. The Turbo can give you that extra sense of feel, teh adrenaline rush from the Turbo and the amense handling, It is rate as the most practical supercar in the business. Believe it or not, this car is amazing.

I had the same situation happen in front of my eyes twice, once where I was trying to hang with it on a Bridge (driving the M5) and the second time I was walking down the street. One was a stock 996tt and the second one had the fabspeed exhaust!

I pray for the day where I'll be picking up my 996tt!

OK, thanks for the replies, but you guys haven't helped me resolve my dilema . Here's some more info... I can easily afford the upgrade, but it wouldn't be the "smart" move, but then again purchasing an M5 is not a "smart" move. The M6 would almost certainly be less than a TT, but in the long run any decision will be fine. If you can't tell, I'm trying to talk myself out of the TT but the image just won't go away. Tell me that it's really unreliable or something...

We won't be able to help. You should drive one as soon as possible, because you need to know if it's the wrong car for you.

If you wait too long, the very idea of owning a 996TT could become larger or more appealing than the car itself. At that point, you don't have a chance of staying happy with the M5.

At the real root of it for me was the fact that I'm an acceleration junkie. For this sort of car nut, the 996TT is a far better choice. Not because it accelerates vastly harder than the M5, but because it does it in a different way. The M5 is so consistent it can become boring. By that I mean that the acceleration is basically instantaneous, and it doesn't really matter which gear you're in or where the tach needle is. It feels like a 747 that was just cleared for takeoff. Steady thrust.

With the TT, there's a bit of drama involved. Depending on where the tach is, boost will build differently. You can hear the turbos whirring (just barely, when the radio is off and the windows closed). In certain circumstances, the acceleration is downright violent. I've given myself a bit of vertigo or kind of like a headache from goofing around, on and off the throttle, learning how to make it really go (just in case someone else were to feel "froggy" on the highway -- c'mon, jump! ). My wife definitely notices the way she's shoved back in the seat. I now say, "Put your head back" before I really whack the throttle.

Am I helping yet?

I was in your same position! I know exactly how you feel because I am 32 and single..My 996tt is not my daily driver, just my personal rollercoaster!..Go and test drive one But, fair warning , you will be hooked! Nothing will ever be the same and the M5 will loose its coolness..I am number 1 on the M6 list and who knows if I'll take the car...If it can do 0-60 in 4.0sec maybe...My car is going under the knife in about 1.5 weeks for an EVO level 2 procedure which will give me 490hp and 510ft/lbs of torque!! I'm also adding a short shifter and car graphic pedals ( all courtesy of the Mandalay Bay Casino-- thanks again for the quid)...

So, I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, you can PM me

I am HERE to SOLVE your DELIMMA!!!!!!

GET the 996 TT !!!!
1) they hold their value well
2) you can get one now
3) PORSCHES NEVER go out of style
especially turbos!!
4) its AWD....for those times when you feel like going thru inclement weather!
5) You can always sell the car later and buy the M6
6)For sure the porsche is more fun.....once you drive one you will always need one...and be warned...you might soon find yourself collecting them as I am!!

DONT get the M6 now:
1) you still have to wait until it comes out
2) It can be all BANGLED up!
3) one word: $$premium$$
4) you may want to wait the mandatory one-year to iron out the typical BMW idiosyncrocies!!!

-alf

hope this was a help!!

Considering what the design direction is going... I would definetly go for the TT... get the TT and the X50 option and you will be set... even w/out the X50 option go for the TT!!

Exclamation I'll make this easy for you. Buy one at once

I was you.

Save yourself the grief and the agonizing. You don't need room for 4 right now, you've got an awesome BMW on the way in a few years. Get the TT at once!

Also, don't follow in my footsteps in the following area: guilt over the fiscal responsibility of turning over cars like these. I've finally given up on this. It's okay, you cost yourself some bucks by moving from one car to another. Who cares -- assuming you can afford it? You buy these cars for pleasure. You've had an M5, now trade it for a 996TT. Then, when the M6 comes, you can see if you like that one more!

Live it up! Besides, why drive BMW's only? op:
