OT: Attention 996TT owners without the X50 package

I just read in this months Road & Track that 996TT owners with the stock 415hp can go back to the dealership retrofit a total of 445hp for $11,000!

I know, $11,000 is a big chunk of change but at least it's under warranty. 30 more ponies for $11,000 FROM PORSHE is not all that bad.

BTW, the same applies to the Carrera, 320hp to 340hp.

So, one can now find an '01 now for under $100K. Another 11K for the upgrade and I think that's one sick set of wheels for $111,000.

And it's still covered under the Porsche warranty!

I am not sure if it is the same full X50 package upgrade or just mods. to the turbos...anyone know?

AFAIK, it's just mods to the DME. Same turbos, same exhaust. Porsche was very conservative with the stock output. I think this just tells the DME that it's OK for the turbos to serve up 0.9bar of boost instead of 0.7

I think I'll wait out the warranty, then go talk to evoms.com for a Stage 3 package. It's only $15k or so. And that's for 540! (both hp and ft-lbs @ 1.1 bar boost)

Angel - this is news to me. I want to check out the mag. Which issue of R&T is it in, and on what page?

Thanks

/Greg

Guys I will clarify this....The option is available, but only as a factory option, you cannot buy the car and then decide to add the X50 package, you can only do it upon purchase......

Porsche says it will bring the turbo to 10 hp shy of the gt2.....

So it seems that one can build a gt2 from a 996tt and save a very nice chunk of change.....

Greg,

It's this June's issue on pg. 49. The issue has a high speed handling test that includes the 996TT, 360M, Z06, M3 and a few others. There is a lot of good reading in it, pick one up if you get the chance.

It's also right next to an article about the RS6 and how us M5 owners should "beware!"

Not true. Although X50 package can only be offered when the car is built, this is separate from X50 option. This package is offered via the Exclusive dept. It is available to owners who have already received their car stock. (Unless R&T has it all wrong)

The X50 is only available when you order a new turbo and couldnt be retrofitted but now it sounds like they will finally make it available. but still i doubt its the same package.

OK, 3 things:

This option is called X51; let's avoid confusion with X50, which clearly can only be applied at the time of build and at a cost of $17,700
A Porsche rep. referenced a company e-mail that stated a price in the high $13ks; not sure about Road & Track's $11k number
The exclusive department of Porsche is kind of like BMW Individual, except that their parts are also carried by dealers and can be added after the car has been built and/or delivered to an owner
Also, those interested in power shouldn't despair if they can't get their hands on an X50 car. There are plenty of ways to get big power from a 996TT, and many of them don't involve dropping nearly $20k.

Seems to me that anytime you want a decent power increase from Porsche, but don't want to void the warranty, its going to cost you a bunch...I agree with MWM, go to EVOMS and get the Level 3 upgrade and save some quid...Now, there is just that warranty thing....
