Because the GT2 is more exclusive, comes with lighter weight composite body panels, deletes the AWD which is better for the track, comes with ceramic brakes standard, has the beautiful rollbar from the factory (at least according to your pics), and is more exclusive.

They say there will only be 175 coming to the US.

You can build up a 996 Turbo, but it will never be exclusive or hold its value like a GT2.

I would never pay $250K for one like these stealers are getting here, but it is a hell of a nice car.

Hmmmm... anyone know what the stateside pricing on the R Turbo is? Some say it is $300K, but who would pay that kind of money when a GT2 is CHEAPER???

For $250K, I think I'd rather pay a little more and get a used F40.

Hamann7, first of all, a Ruf R-Turbo outperforms the GT2, in all areas, i have compared the stats. You can also get the Ruf R-Turbo with RWD, instead of AWD. I read an article that the Ruf Turbo costs in the vicinity of 117K pounds. I would take the 525 HP ruf over the GT2 anyday, even if it does cost more $$

There are a variety of reasons why 2WD is better than AWD on a track, and I'm sure someone else could explain more reasons. But the two principal reasons are:

1) AWD adds weight to the car

2) You have less control over the car with AWD, and it's not easy to do things like drift and powerslide, which you can pretty easily do with RWD.

3) The steering on AWD isn't as direct and precise.

Porsche's decision to use AWD on the Turbo is to make it docile and safe for the majority of Porsche owners, who are not trained drivers and prone to errors such as inducing off-throttle oversteer. By controlling the amount of torque and traction to the wheels, it can compensate for most of the 911's tendency to oversteer, especially with the aid of PSM.

Why do you think the GT2 literally whoops the Turbo's *** on the track? On the Nuburgring, it beats it by a whopping 10 seconds or so! But for the average driver, they would be better off with the AWD...

Mabey i am just ignorant, but wouldn't AWD make corners easier to take by making the car literally stick to the road, and mutually take the overall track time down? Doesn't make sense to me either..

Robb,

You're not taking into account the added weight of an AWD system, the more imprecise steering, and less ability to drift or toss the car around the corners.

Yes, for average drivers, you probably would have better lap times, but for expert drivers, they all prefer RWD because they can manipulate the car more...

There is a reason why none of Porsches club sport cars have the AWD system.

Of course, all this changes in inclement weather-- rain, snow, etc., there AWD definitely has the advantage.

Put it this way, is the Audi RS4 a better handling car than the BMW M3?

Great car! What an ultimate indulgence without a (generally annoying) passenger seat.
