!!!!!!!! V10 M5 !!!!!!!!!

OK, I know it's too soon to say for sure! I just received the new issue of Roundel today, and I'm paging through. They are making a big deal about the new 7 in most of the magazine, but there is a little article on pg. 24, bottom of the page with the first official spy picture of the 5 Series being testing.

"A heavily disguised prototype of the all-new fifth generation (E60) 5 Series hit the Arctic roads in northern Europe during the winter's scarce daylight hours. The disguised prototype....reveals the wrapover trunk line which apparently is now....a traditional BMW design element....The new 5 series, set to launch in the second half of 2003....the first new BMW entirely concieved by Burkhard Goeschel, current head of BMW R&D.....

[here is the part that puts a glimmer in my eye]

Other details: Six speed automatic transmission from ZF; optional all wheel drive (xi models); 535i will be rated at 270 horsepower, that's nice , 545i makes 330 [HP], that's really nice too ,

but the nicest thing of all is this:

430-plus-horsepower M5 expected to appear with Formula-1-inspired 5.0-liter V10 engine. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please make this come true, I promise I'll be good mommy, I promise I promise. This would be the March issue of Roundel, pg. 24; one of these days I'm going to get a scanner so that I can scan these articles in for you.

A friend had lunch with the CTO of BMW NA a couple of months back...

He said that the CTO drives an M5... with a V10.

This is, of course, now 3rd hand info, so take it with a grain of salt.

Sounds bogus.

What happened to the 70 ponies? The rumors all said 500hp.

Take it from a longtime BMW follower/fan anything you hear this early is usually speculation or a deliberate plant to confuse the competition.

Oh, there's no way the boys from Munich will give us less hp than MB

Stay tuned

We're getting so many different numbers from different places that I'm just going to take this with a grain of salt. I wouldn't be surprised if the MB E55 has 476 hp...if that's the case then BMW will have to make their V10 offer 500 hp!

Here's that article

Hmmm, pretty early to tell. Thhe current M5 did not come out until almost 3 years after the E39 was out (1997). I only got word of the M5 in 1999.

I remember three years ago reading and hearing about the new E46 M3 with a V8... My heart went "pitter-patter" and I got all excited - for nothing!!

I will believe it once it is official and comes right from the horse's mouth??

I believe the new engine will be a V10 and will deliver 450+ hp and also very strong torque numbers (close to 400 lb/ft).

also I have a feeling BMW will be moving to one transmission to rule them all: SMG.

sometimes I think these magazines make up theories just like the rest of us.... I'm sure if we start rumors here that the next M5 will have a 1000hp V16 engine, sooner or later all the magazines will say the same thing...

Add twin-turbos to that V16 and you've got the Bugatti Veyron!
