Is the 8 series classified as being a "M?"

I know about the requirements in order for a BMW to be classified as being a "M" car but I was wondering if the 8 series also falls under this category? For instance, we've got the Z8, which uses the same drivetrain/engine as the M5 and meets the requirements. Seems like the 8 series was a special breed of BMW but is it a "M?"

The 850 Csi is considered as an ///M

It's registered like an M8, but it's not the M8

          the real M8 was a prototype : http://M8.ClubE31.com

On the official BMW Site, the ///M 850Csi is recognised like an M Classic :

          Quote:
With this sports coupé the engineers at BMW created a dream car. Every detail of the 850CSi reflects the innovative spirit, aesthetic class, power and dynamics. With a total of 1,510 units built, it has today become a much sought-after rarity. Technical highlights such as Automatic Stability Control + Traction (ASC+T) with differential lock and active rear axle kinematics were premiered in the BMW 850CSi.

Does this tell you whether the car is a "M" car or not? By looking at the VIN number?

Interesting, I never knew that the 850Csi was considered to be a "M" car. Does it have a manual transmission too?

Wish I had known about your club back when I had my 840 a few years ago, I might have kept it! BTW, stunning car you have there, I like the two-toned seats.
