Mixed emotions

Ok - it doesn't look great - that's for sure. But I hear with the 400+TT AND killer off-road ability it is going to be the real deal in terms of performance.

Personally, I think it is going to do well, and if form holds then it will get better looking in the next generation or two. I'll wait 'til then myself.

Besides, a TT is awd - how need an SUV?

it's strange why porsche wanted to build suv

I personally have a mercedes ML55, even though it's quite fast and awd, but it's useless when it's in snow... I'm in LA now, but am from vancouver canada...it snows there in the winter... and I had a car accident while driving that suv in snow...

Since to reach such performanc, they need to use the sports tire instead of the tires we usually use for jeep, and that definetely is unsuitable for winter driving... and it cost a lot a lot a lot to just change the tire in the winter time....well...i was told that my ML cost around 2000 just to replace the tire since the size is specially made, and they had to back ordered it...

samething applies to porsche, why get such high powered jeep when you can buy a TT and have even greater driving experiences... but not an automatic...especially on a jeep, which you can simply kick other car's *** "only a straight line"... but got *** kicked when cornering...."well happened to me" i lost to a my friend's boxter...(not even S)... and i couldn't even see his tail light...

If you want an SUV-- there are only two choices for the purist:

1) Mercedes Benz Gelandewagen (G500) or if you are lucky enough to be in Europe, the G 55 AMG

2) Hummer H1

My personal opinion: Cayenne is about as stupid and useless as an X5, Mercedes ML, and Hummer H2

What's the point of buying an SUV if you can't off-road it properly? And if you want to do 0-60 in under 6 seconds, buy a 540i Sportwagon.

The X5 4.6is or ML55 may be quick, but it'll be funny to see it literally begging for help in the rough terrain on its 18 or 20 inch wheels... it probably sheds tears when its bodykit gets the slightest hint of dirt. The G and the H1 would hand the others its *** off the pavement!

It might not be the best design and it might have limited off-road capabilities. But how many people who actually end up buying the Cayenne care about that? It's about buying a brand and having the fastest SUV out there. And that's why Porsche will sell every one it makes.

SUV's a misnomer...

With nearly half of the new vehicles sold in the US in the SUV category there isn't going to be much off-roading. SUVs are fashionable and you figure you spend $40K and get one whopping truck that can move you, your kids, your friend's kids, and some neighbors to boot! You also get to bully smaller cars out of the way whilst tooling along in the fast lane at 90mph. Nearly all SUVs (incl the X5) exceed the minimum loaded weight that lets these behemoths into a tax haven. That's right, you can write one of these off if you've got a business.

Ok, so what's my point? Well, as the SUV, really the wrong word now (hence BMWs S"A"V), grows up consumers are going to demand luxury and speed. Car manufacturers just can't afford to neglect this huge market. Even the venerable Porsche must make a foray...because it's the bottom line that counts, after all, at the end of the day. And I bet I'll see one of the Cayennes in Silicon Valley in no time! Because it's a Porsche, it's fast and it'll toast the X54.6is and the ML55 and carry 2 latte's, a bag of groceries, and the Sunday news!

We all have our personal opinions and tastes. Mine run in the sports car category. It'll be the 911's, M5's, M3's, and CLK55's of this world for me! But I was still excited when I saw the X5 and am actually interested in seeing what BMW has in store for the X7. And I get a kick out of an X5 nonchalantly hauling past all those Dakotas, Navigators and Escalades....and me! And with Porsche entering the market, that's got to put pressure on MB and BMW to push their next gen super-SUV's up one more notch.

So, I wish Porsche, BMW and MB the best of luck and when and if I ever buy an SUV...I'll be glad I can get one that'll have a good dose of German engineering!

(1) Porsche will do well with sales of this thing especially in the US. This may not be a true drivers car but it will help fund new and better 911 variants - remember the financial trouble they were in before the Boxster came out

(2) If you want this, don't buy it because of the name. Volkswagen are bringing out the SAME vehicle as the Cayenne, labelled as a VW which will be called the Touareg (costs half too)
