911 Tubo or 996TT

Is there a difference between a 911 Turbo and a 996 TT? I've heard people use those model names interchangeably, and I'm wondering if they are the same model or not? I couldn't find any info on the 996TT on the Porsche web site.

I believe that the number '996' is like the e39 model number for Bimmers. It is an internal chassis number to signify this production cycle. The previous 911 was 993.

And I think TT is just an shorter way to say twin turbo.

No, this is incorrect. The name "911" came from the original Carrera's model designation, 911. The 911 was the body of the first generation Carrera Model.
