I think the 993TT is much more raw, fun, and better looking than the 996TT. But the ergonomics aren't nearly as good, and the console layout is poor. Stock versus stock, it sounds much better, too, than the 996TT but that's easy to fix. Power feels the same, gearbox similar, visibility similar, and performance similar, at least at 8/10's. I'm not good enough to get the cars driving at 10/10ths.

I actually find that I like the 993TT better than the current one especially in terms of it's RAW performance capabilities. In fact, one of my favorite images of this car was taken with the 993TT!

How do you fix the sound on the 996? After the fix, how does it sound compared to the 993's air-cooled engine.

Aftermarket exhaust. No reasonable solution with the stock unit. Will typically sound more like an air-cooled engine, but depends on which exhaust you get.

A-Train,

Which aftermarket exhaust sounds the closest to the 993 air-cooled sound?

Thanks.

Only heard one in person and that was on my car, made by Evo. www.evoms.com. They have a sound clip posted on their web site under "News" from Dec 31. The exhaust was perfect from day one and I know of other owners who are very happy with theirs, based on their posts on a TT board. If not for the exhaust, I'd have sold the TT earlier; that's how lame the stock exhaust is, really detracting from what a Porsche should be, and the Evo was sweet; sounds good and makes the car truly feel faster, though it does not actually make the car faster. At low revs, it has a slightly throatier and deeper sound than stock, great when blipping the throttle, and at WOT it roars, with a quality sound and no cheesiness that some aftermarket exhausts sound like. A few of the M5 guys on this board heard my Evo in person, too, including Boston Rocket and TFung, and they loved it and had big smiles on their faces when I drove back around to them in the TT to get their feedback on it.

All 996TT's exhausts are a one-piece cat / muffler set up, so they can get pricey, at least when bought new. Since I sold my 996TT a couple of weeks ago, I still have my Evo exhaust with about 3k miles on it, all boxed up. If interested in it, pm me.

Maverick:

I heard Adam's exhaust that day also. It sounds great, as he said, nice low end rumble and then it turns into a nice growl all the way up. He drove around the block so we could all hear it and I must say it was very nice, even when he was all the way around the block . But what amazed me the most was the sound of those big brakes clamping down when he quickly came up on a cop . They sounded glourious and definately got the job done. I do not think that the cop even noticed the fast 996tt n the rear view, he was too busy eating his breakfast.

I also think that the 993TT is a better-looking car than the 996TT. But then, I think the '94 ('93 for European folks) Turbo 3.6 (964) is better-looking than the 993TT. Remember that goofy Miami cops movie called "Bad Boys" with Will Smith and Martin what's-his-name? That was a black '94 Turbo 3.6 that Will Smith drove. Outrageously nice-looking car, to me at least. Those can be had for somewhere in the neighborhood of $50k for a well-kept example.

Maybe my opinion will change with time as to which look better. The engineer in me demands a warranty for these high-tech, expensive-to-fix monsters, so a new one is the most sensible option.

Yes, I would agree those 94 3.6 Turbos looked amazing (Black only!!).

It would appear that when choosing a turbo (or any Porsche for that matter) - the newer the model year the more refined & reliable the car is. The older versions are more raw - more of a challenge to drive at say 9/10ths.

I've been looking for the past couple of months and am about 90% leaning towards a 996TT even though I prefer the look of the older models.

993 is my all time favourite 911 , and the turbo is just the best , with wider body and this wing , it's really nice , the one on GT2 is way too much...

Dealers can add a warranty to a car that is otherwise out of warranty. Dealer uses a nationally recognized third-party service (so your dealer is really an insurance agent of sorts and is compensated somehow by the third-party service) and runs about $1300 for 1 year, $2K for 2 years; at least, it did for a 993TT. You get a warranty worked on by a dealer's Porsche technicians; just as if you had bought a new car. Worth the piece of mind to get one.

PM if you want more details.

I had two 97 TT's

First one was stolen! Ouch. Second one I sold when I thought I wasn't going to use it enough any more. Regret that very much.

Overall, the 993 is awesome. Any TT is. And it depends what you are coming from and what you are used to. I found it to be everyday driveable. I liked the old Porsche dash layout. Does it coddle you like a Lexus, no? Will you EVER care? No.

It is REALLY important to get a good history of your car. Break-in, especially on the Turbos, is cruicial. And not just keeping rev's down for a couple k miles. I mean from 3-10K. Did the person run it at 4000rpm for a stretch, then at 5000, then at 6000... all stuff which improves the engine performance down the line...

All this being said. The car is a joke. Awesome, awesom piece of machinery. Keep your eyes on the windshield flex - does it make a lot of noise when you go over a speed bump - and the 97's had a rash of iffy sunroofs.

You'll have a car of 99% of the world's dreams.
