          Looking at a 850i...need advice.......

          Hi 840/850 drivers,

My dad is moving to Sweden in a couple of month and is starting to look at some of the posibilities regarding what car to choose.

He is thinking of the Audi TT........but..............................

About 10 years ago a BMW dealer where we have bought cars from in the past got the new 850i. Fast forward to 2002, he still has the car It has only driven 100 km. The car is as new, no one has been sitting in the seats...........they say they have been taking care of the car and it looks like it.....saw it today....looks totally new. I have kept an eye on this car since he got it and I know it hasīnt driven more then they say. Itīs dark grey and grey leather.....looks stunning. Got the standard 16" wheels.

Is it something you would buy? Thereīs NO way heīs going to find a 1991-1996 850i with 100 km and in this condition (itīs like picking it up from the factory in Münich). I think itīs a car, he will be able to keep for many year.

          Comments please.........................

Best regards from the E39 board,

          Mike-S.

          Wow... Impressive

Finding a "new" 850 is totally unbelievable....
Your father should go for it !
Not the Audi TT, the 8 is more classy, individual, rare & powerfull
That's the King/Queen of the Autobahn just like most of the BMWs
What year is it ? Auto or Manual ?
I think you should visit Mike Coenen website : www.e31.net (it has mainly infos on the 850csi, but you'll learn a lot)
          And mine at www.ClubE31.com
It's more like an Owner's Group, you'll find sweet photos, owners advices, I'm working on a pure Technic Website for the 8, which will be available soon (inc. Modifications, Maintenance,Online Repair Manual, etc...)
Check http://MembersPages.ClubE31.com and show the page to your father !!! After he will saw these cars, I'm sure he will forget the Audi :-)

I bought a '97 840Ci two years ago, it had only 29000 kms (nearly new for these cars), each day I'm happier with that car, and be sure I'll keep it forever (until i'll find the B12 5.7l of my dreams, but i'll definitly keep the 840 too)

What to say more....If your father wants to have a car of Passion, with an outstanding and timeless design, moreover with a V12, well the Audi TT has no chance...
But if he wants to be like every young men then he has to go for the Audi

Above all, if he does purchase the car, I would be really glad to welcome you to our next meetings in Europe (one in Germany & one in France this summer), would be really a blast to see a new 850...Driving with +10 over 840/850s is really a great moment

My advice is GO FOR IT, but we are on a BMW forum and I'm the BMW 8 Series Worldwide Owners Group so.....

          Hi,

Thanks for the very fast reply. I agree with you on every count, that the 850i would be the right choise.

You asked what year and what gearbox.....1991....auto......
(he wants the auto, so thatīs perfect)

Could there be a problem with the car, when it hasīnt moved (100 km) for 10 years?? Im thinking about the electronics, brakes, discs or anything else??

          Best regards,

          Mike-S.

If the headgaskets have dryed youīve got a serious problem. ( some $$$$ ).Check the A/C, rust in the discs, all fluids and buy new tyres...Also check the radiator hoses, high pressure fuel lines, all the belts and the battery of course.

          Regards.

P.S: How much are they asking for the car ?

          Hi

100km as in 100000m? If the car has not been stored properly; you are going to experience MANY problems when you start driving this car... Rubber bushing, brakes, AC, engine gaskets, electrical ++++ Cars are build to be driven...

This car should be bought and put on display in a collection not driven... Buy a car with 50000km instead if you plan on driving it, much cheaper and less headaches... But do buy ithe 100km one and but it in storage!!!

          regards
          Carl

No, itīs not 100.000 km but 100 km. The BMW dealer says (asked him the other day) that they have taken care of it in every since of the word. The car is in mint condition, but still itīs 10 years old. I will try to take some pictures of it in the comming weeks.

Opened the hood and it was looking down a totally new engine (well I guess it is)

would a car like this still be covered under a manufacturers warranty? If not then it can be purchased with an aftermarket BMW warranty. And if it is in a BMW main dealers showroom, they theoretically should have looked after it, knowing how to store/not to store a car etc.
