First of all I apologize for this O.T. I didn't know where I could post this. I just hope nobody won't delete it.
I have noticed some of them have big front spoilers and big rear wings and also the M colours. Some other M1 don't look so good; no front spoilers and 'strange' wheels. Why this ? Was all this optional stuff ?
This one has a huge rear wing + m colours + front spoiler. Race car ?
This one has the front spoiler + more discret rear wing + luxury interior. Not race car I suppose ?
This looks very diferent from the other two.

Hi Raymond,
Thanks for the info. I see there are at least 4 diferent versions of the M88 engine ( M88, M88/1, M88/2 and M88/3 ). I was wondering if the only "big" diference between the M88 and M88/3 is that one has Kugelfischer injection and the other Bosh ??
I suppose you must be very proud of owning the M5 E28 as its engine has a racing heritage...Not like today engines.
At the moment I am doing some research about the S38's history.
The M88/2 is a twin turbocharged engine. Actually much development for the M88/2 has been done by Schnitzer who turbocharged the M49/3 engine in 1976. As you probably know, the M49/3 and M49/4 where used for the racing CSL's during 1975-1976 seazon's (ETC group 5 and American IMSA series).
The turbocharged M49/3 was called M49/4 and yielded 750bhp at 1,3 bar or 950bhp at 1,6bar.
Although the M88 is develloped from the M49, they where quitte different. For instance the M49 used a gear train to drive the two camshafts. The M88's camshafts where driven by a chain directly.
Jetboy,
The M88/3 used Bosch motronic 1.2 with 6 individual butterfly valves. The M88, M88/1 and M88/2 use a Kugelfisher system.
Currently I am writing an article about the history of the S38 engine for the bmwe34m5 FAQ's site.
With best regards,
Raymond

1: M88/3 has a wet sump lubrication, the M88 has dry sump
2: M88/3 CR is 10,5:1, the M88's is 9,0:1
3: M88/3 uses Bosch Motronic fuel management system with 6 individual butterfly valves, M88 has Kugelfisher mechanical system
4: There must be other difference as wel.
Yes, I am very proud of owning an immaculate European E28 ///M5 with the M88/3 engine.
Cheers
Raymond

Didn't the M1 have it's own race car series, that used to be a pre-event to say a F1 race (or sim)?
Also was it BMW's own M1 race series? Due to the fact it took so long to get into production, by the time it arrived, the rules had changed which made it illegal to race in the classes it was originally designed for, so they formed their own!!
If so, how long did it run for?
Cheers
