          Post "Taking delivery" FAQ

Folks I would like to create a FAQ related to taking delivery of a car. I read the experiences some people have with clueless dealers, and including my experiences (Audi, but clueless dealer is not unique to BMW), where cars were not preped right, things that should be in the trunk are missing, etc...

I picked up things such as Personal Key Programming, calibrating the tire pressure warnings, ask if there was "damage in transport", 1st aid kit, tool kit, and other dirty little secrets of the industry....

I hope that by the time all the information from is compiled and edited, we will have a valuable check list to take with us when going to pick up our new M5..

If any of you can think of things that should be a part of such list, please post it, and I'll compile and post it on my website...

          A.

Fantastic idea. Without rushing you, please do it soon. I have been lurking on this board since I got on the local waiting list in Feb. 2000 and the info has been invaluable. My Imola Red/Caramel baby is currently on the "Tellus", coming across the Atlantic as we speak, expected in Charleston on the 12th of Nov. with delivery to me in Charlotte, NC ~17th. I will post picts as soon as I can, both of the M5 and (sadly) the outgoing Speed Yellow C2.

Thanks to all on this board!

          This is a great idea!

The one I remember is to make sure the dealer setable options are made with your input. There was an older thread with the list of options that can be set.

Burl Walnut (also enhanced M-audio, PDC, split rear seat, Luxury - all leather)

From what I gather in reading the board for some time, the following would also seem to be useful considerations at delivery:
          (1) Call several days before delivery for your Nav-CD to be ordered and waiting (I've done this.)
          (2) Pre-order your BMW phone (using info on this board), if desired, so that it can be installed during dealer prep. I ordered the ATT One-Rate phone.
          (3) Work through the DSC-programmable options checklist posted elsewhere on this board and present it to your dealer prior to dealer prep.
          (4) Reserve as much vacation immediately following delivery as possible.

What are "dealer setable" option? Could you reffer me to this thread?

          Thanks,

          A.

Somebody else on the board had problems getting all the keys from their dealer. For the record there are four keys for each M5:

          - 2 Main Keys
          - A flat "wallet" key
          - A valet key.

Here's the text of the message:

Steve asked the question and I thought I could scan the service sheet for my car as an answer and post it, but that has proved hard to do, so here are the functions that can be set on the dealers service diagnostic machine.
          1. Anti theft system.
          Set by door lock or
          set by remote control
          2. Visual arm / disarm. on/off
          3. Power locks.
Remote control of interior lights on/off.
          Autolock after 2 min on/off
Autolock on drive away (5mph) on/off
Selective door locks ie: one press opens drivers door only double press opens all doors and boot (trunk)
          4. Window and roof controls.
One touch is selectable for each door and the roof independently; open and/orclosed. (think about this before asking questions)
          Total closer from remote on/off
total or partial opener from remote on/off
          5. interior light soft on or off on/off.
          6.External lights.
          DRL on/off
          Home lights on/off/40s/90s/150s/240s
          7.Accoustic warnings key on/off
          8. Heating A/C and vent settings key seletive on/off by key 1/2.
          9.Flaps recirc. air memory on/off
          10.A/C Cooling output high/low
          11. Seat/mirror memory when unlocking/when opening door on/off
          12. PDC volume 1-6 and switch on message on/off.
There you are that little lot should drive all your dealers mad when you hit them on Monday morning with your custom settings.
What SHOULD happen, is you should be given a print out of the factory defaults (which is everything off) when you take delivery of yourcar, then you tick the features you want set and the dealer will set them up while you sign up the rest of the paperwork.
Straw poll: HOW MANY OF YOU HAD THIS DONE.
          Count me as a YES.
