I've noticed a lot of threads about people buying a Ferrari 550 ,355, or 360 to add to their collection often paying way over MSRP for a used model. Ferrari's only demand such a high value in the U.S.A.. For example, you can buy a 1997 550 Maranello for around $110,000.00 in Germany with 355 spyders only costing $65,000.00 or so. Check out www.Ferrari-sales.de for cars now available in that price range. You can have one shipped over for around $1500.00 by sea and $5,000.00 by air. DOT/EPA conversion is less than $10,000.00 which gives you a highly sought after car in the U.S.A. for pennies on the dollar. You can enjoy it on the autobahn for a few days before you go home too ! I'm going over this spring to get a 355 spyder.

P.S. current dm exchange rate is 0.43dm to $1.00USD
What about your contact in italy? I've tried calling, emailing, etc. all to no avail. I'd much rather have a new 360 Spyder. As is current, i'll have to keep my 2002 allocation, but getting one sooner would be MUCH cooler.

A 550 can be had here (so. cal) at MSRP with no wait beyond build time. The gouge is off on these cars, too - except Barchetta.
360, obviously, is another story. Something to consider: Locate a dealer in Europe, check on possiblity of ordering U.S. spec car and take delivery there. Enjoy the favorable exchange rate, the favorable driving environment, have your car sooner and w/out certification constraints/fees. Not sure this is possible but worth looking into, perhaps.
Here's a source in Italy (gray market), Dan. Gary Drenik, drenikdino@hotmail.com, +39-339-6126177.
What's the catch? I mean, this can't be a risk-less process or everybody'd be doing it.
Is it possible for DOT/EPA to deny a car for any reason? If there's no catch, are you interested in a partner in crime on your voyage next year, Parker? I'd be happy to pick up a 97 355 Berlinetta for $60k or so and drive the snot out of it.

No catch...just most people don't think about or want to go to Europe and buy a car. Contact JK Technologies at 410.366.6332 or David Castilow at 561.747.3311. They both do the DOT/EPA conversion work for euro cars imported in to the U.S.A. They will pick up the car at the U.S. port and do all the customs paperwork and then do the conversion to bring the car in compliance. You can also call Dick Meritt of the DOT at 202.366.5300. He can give you all the rules on bringing the car over. A lot of people are doing it. JK Tech is booked for weeks.
