          M5 on Nürburgring

Last Sunday I visited Nürburgring with my girlfriend and a friend with an Audi S4. It was a superior experiance to drive my M5 around the fameous "Nordschleife". It's amazing how fast you can go around a corner without loosing control. BUT the highlight of the day was a trip with the BMW Ring-Taxi: One lap with a professional driver in a standard M5. YAHOO! Is this the same car as mine??? It's unbelivable how fast it's possible to go with a 2000 kg car on this mean piece of track. He drove with the DSC off and maintained 100% control all the time. I can't high enough highlight how impressed I was! Twice we were airborne (with a 2 tons limousine). I also noticed how he treated the car in a different way compared to me, he was constantly hitting the rev limiter and was almost never below 5000 rpm. Magnificent, my best regards to M GmbH in Munich!

          That sounds like good fun:-)

I was there a month ago, and tried to get a go in the Ring Taxi, but they said it was booked up until 2001!

How did you get a go???

We did five laps of the Nordschleife in '98 when we did Euro Delivery on our 540i.

It's not a track you can go fast on right away. It's 13 miles, something like 150 total turns/kinks/humps, not much runoff area.

This is the official site (the English non-Flash version - I hate Flash, but note that the English part is incomplete and you'll periodically get put back into the German site)

An entertaining 'Ring site with a lot of photos.

The nice interactive track map that used to be at cbsgi1.bu.edu seems to be gone but I crawled the files so may try to put it back up somewhere if I can do so w/o bending anyone's copyright nose.

It was pure luck, I called several times to check for canceld bookings and on Sunday morning at 10.15 I got a reservation at 11.15. At the time of the call we were in Aachen, 100 km away, we just made it. My girlfriend got the opportunity to sit in the front seat because me and my friend decided that was the only fair soloution for us....
