anybody else having trouble with the 2002 nav volume?

i have a 2002 m5. when i have the nav volume set to "max", the volume of the the directions is a little softer than the radio volume into which it cuts in. if you have it anything below the max setting, it is completely inaudible. i took this back to my dealer and i was told that this is the way the new nav systems are and there's nothing that can be done about it. as if it were god speaking, they said the "regional" representative looked at it and agreed that nothing could be done. this makes absolutely no sense to me and i don't buy it. has anyone else eperienced this problem. is this a software glitch and, if so, could we petitiion as a group to get it fixed. any other suggestions. also, was this an issue on the older nav versions. many thanks in advance - jf

I updated from the 2001 to the 2002 software but have had no volume related issues. The directions volume is actually pretty loud when set high on the volume meter, but there isn't a relationship between the stereo volume and the Nav volume.

I had the same problem in my 2002. The nav plays through the phone input on the stereo. you can set the phone volume from within the radio service mode. from a previous post:

I broke the code last night on my 2002 M5. Here is how I got the service menu up. I have a car that was built in week 40. 10-1-01.

Get in car close doors, turn key to Position 1 or 2, hit the accept on the Nav system and make sure the radio is off.

pull the key out and put it in Pos 2.

turn radio on and hit the "Select" key and hold it until the display changes or flashes and becomes the menu screen.

I then turned the right hand computer knob one position right or left and

You are in: You now see the service menu appear with the radio serial number.

Use the < > keys to scroll through the functions and the 1 and the 2 keys to make selections for each setting.

You see (not in this order):
Serial Number
Software Version
GAL (mine was set to 2, I changed it to 6)
FM station info
Man
DSP
TP volume
Country

Turning the radio off saves the changes. I also found all my preset radio stations were lost and had to be reprogrammed.

scroll to TP volume and increase it a few clicks. Turn off the radio, turn it back on, and try the nav again. That should do the trick. if it doesn't let me know and I have another idea.

I fixed the same problem on my 2002, but I made two changes at once and I'm not sure which one did it. The instructions above seemed the most probable.

When I first got my 2002 I had the same problem until I realized (following someone elses post on this board) that the navigation system plays through the DSP. Not being an audiphile, I had my DSP off. With the DSP on, I have no problems, but when it is off, it is difficult to hear the voice (but not to the point where I am worried about it).

I also have the "not loud enough" navagation voice.

The dealer I took it to told me they called BMWNA and were told there may be a software fix "in the future."

If we can use the work-a-rounds here, fine.

Otherwise, I am going to start complaining.

Sometimes I turn the radio up loud and then turn it off. This gives me a loud navagation voice. But of course then I can't listen to the radio. And that's rediculous.

Also try this....

With the radio off go to the settings screen where you set NAV volume. Turn NAV volume "softer" a few times (to the middle). Turn the radio volume knob up (again, the radio is off here). turn the NAV volume up a half turn and see what happens.

I did the procedure in my last post as well as this one at the same time and I can now hear the nav Voice plenty loud.

Remember that the NAV volume "setting" doesn't change the volume of the voice, only its volume relative to the radio.

thanks all. i think i've been through all of the listed permutations without success. i'll try them all again. my current situation seems to be the same as bart carter's - that it's just too soft and will require a software fix from bmw. if anyone else has any other suggestions, please let me know - i'll try them. as it stands now, if i really want to hear the directions while i'm on the road, i need to turn the radio volume way up and then turn the radio off. any help would be hugely appreciated. i'm and engineer, not even a precise, hair-splitting german engineer, and this is not how i would design this system - so my repair guy's statement that this is how the system was designed just doesn't wash. for 80 large, this is not the type of shenanigans one should have to deal with. other than that, at 1700 miles, this car is not to be believed. thanks, again, jf
