Near cleaning disaster!
Yesterday I was scrubbing the beast because I got caught ina an evening rain on Monday night.
I was getting ready to clean the wheels so I had everything ready. Water running soap in the bucket sponge in one hand and wheel cleaner in the other hand. I use Sonus wheel cleaner for its gentle yet powerful qualities. I just got four new wheels so I am being very anal about keeping them spotless and beautiful.
I get started. I spray a generous amount of the wheel cleaner covering the entire wheel making sure to get it in every crevace and even on the inside of the rim. All of a sudden I think to myself, "that doesnt smell like the wheel cleaner". I raise the bottle and noticed that I grabbed the wrong bottle. This was not wheel cleaner, this was the super intense degreaser/cleaner that could practically melt metal !
I quickly read the bottle and sure enough, it says right there on the warnings "DO NOT USE ON ANODIZED OR PAINTED WHEELS" I quickly grabbed the hose and washed the wheel off as fast as possible. I felt like I was flushing acid from my eyes. Thank Goodness it does not appear to have had time to do any harm.
This may seem crazy to a lot of you but I figure if anyone can appreciate this story it is someone on this board!
-Cheers

Chris,
I am certain you were immediately overcome with guilt?? right? and you were angry with yourself? I have done silly things like this in the past (I am sure most of us do this from time to time) and you have to deal with the fact that you did something totally stupid.
It sounds like no harm was done in this case though? Whew!!!!

Steve,
Cant wait to see the wheels! They sound beautiful. What tires did you go with the SO3's? What time will you be in town tomorrow?

I've felt your pain before -- I use Westley's Bleche-White for my tires, and I used to have a set of polished (i.e. no clearcoat) wheels. That Bleche White would stain the hell out of the wheels if I wasn't careful.

Good Save!
Congratulations on your informed awareness. 99% of people (but not members of THIS board ) would never have thought about it until AFTER their wheels were ruined.
But you SMELLED it - smell is one of the True Car Guy's most valuable diagnostic tools), diagnosed it and remedied it. WAY TO GO!

My wife (being the most-prepared person on earth ) actually keeps a fire extinguisher in each of our cars.
Yesterday, she set back and reclined the front seat to realx, and caught the extinguisher's trigger and the thing exploded inside the car .
She spent the next 90 minutes wiping the fine green gains from the interior, but being at night, we didn't know if she got it all. Map pockets, ventilator flaps, etc. etc.
I have an appoinement with a detailer to let the pros handle this. Does anyone, especially Greg, know if these extinguisher grits are corrosive, or can do long-term damage to the interior?
No, no, no it's not the M5 but our 4 days old Highlander.
Thanks for your education.
