          Oil Usage...AGAIN...

I have been running Castrol Syntec 10w-40 (since it is readily available). I have used a qt in the last 600 or so miles. I know my E36 M3 drank quite a bit, but after about 15k miles, that usage stopped. I have 24k on the beast. What is everyone else's experience here. I wonder if I could be experiencing a little premature ring wear...anyone? I will start a log book and give that to the dealer at the next maintenance. FWIW, I change the oil myself every 3000 miles. Thanks.

          Dave,

I too am very religious with my oil service intervals - also at every 3K miles. I now have almost 14K miles on my car and I am using about 1 quart in between changes. I usually add about 1/2 quart every 1200-1500 miles or so.

At the beginning, I was using 1 quart every 600 miles or so, therefore my BEAST has a somewhat dimished appetite for oil now.

          hi,

i have used the engine compartment recommended 5w-30 weight since i took possession of my 06/2000 build in 07/00.

until lately, i burned approximately a quart every 1300?1500 miles. now, with 23000 miles on the odometer the burn seems to be a bit less--like a quart every 1500?1700 miles.

the car is just great. no major problems.

now, i am not superstitious but i sure hope my saying this doesn't put the jinx on my beast.

          Dave,

What is the build date of your ENGINE? If it is before 3/00, your oil consumption will be higher than newer builds, and the recommended oil viscosity is 10W-60. The heavier oil is less subject to ring blowby, reducing the oil consumption. The rings were changed to meet closer tolarences on the newer builds, thus requiring 5W-30 oil.

The other factor is your driving style. The S62 engine (in the E39 M5 and the E52 Z8) will use oil if pushed hard constantly.

Consider getting a compression test to rule out premature cylinder wall/ring wear if in doubt. Good luck.

I will attempt to get my dealership to do this, once I document things a bit more. Regardless of 10w-40 vs 10w-60, 1 qt in less than 600 miles is CRAZY. Guess we will see what happens. Thanks!

          Not, "requiring," but "permitting."

The BMW tech note said that 5W-30 was preferred for the newer engines, but that 10W-60 was still permitted. Clearly, anything in between can't hurt.
