Pilot Sport PS2, no star

Hi all,

I did a search, to no avail. I just had my first set of PS2's installed, and noticed the fronts have the "star" on them that designates them BMW specific, however, the rears do not have a "star", just the load rating of 99Y. Does Michelin make a BMW "star" rated tire for the rears? Am I good?

I know that Porsche tires have the N1 or N2 ratings and are acutally a different compound, but is this true for BMW.

P.S. I just got off the phone with Michelin and they said I was good to go, and that all compounds for BMW, Mercedes, etc... (excluding Porsche) are the same. I am not sure if I believe them or not.

I got stars on my rear PS2.

It is a slighty different load rating but you are good to go. I went thru the same thing and was confused, I even emailed France.

In the end all is ok.

I just noticed my rears have the "K1" marking which is a Ferrari designation. Now I am really confused.

Sounds like you'll be okay. Let us know how you like them. Did you get them here locally or via TireRack, etc? THANKS!

If ya get them from Tirerack they will pull "star" tires for you.

Discount tire sucks, They dont know what they are doing. I had to go all the way to Poway to find a good installer.

I have heard the one in PB is good.

Yes, Discount Tire. Funny, I also went to the Discount in Poway for the tires and install. They are pretty good. The PB one sucks, though.

I use Discount because the dealer suggested them because they offer the tire warranty (which my wife had used 3 times on her PS2's) and BMW does not.

Any more insight on not having the "star" would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you are going with stock sizes, there are 2 separate one's for the front. The one designated for BMW, and a new one with the XL load rating. If you go to Tire Rack and do the tire selector via car type, it will automatically give you the BMW one. Some people have commented that the tires could use a bit of stiffness. In this case maybe go with the new XL rating model. Just something to consider.

Update:

Discount Tire has ordered the Star version of the PS2 for me. Although the set won't be in until next week!!!!

Both Michelin and BMW told me they highly recommend sticking with the OEM star version of the tire. Each manufacturer can request Michelin or any other tire maker, to "tweak" a tire specifically for their needs, i.e. "Performance Luxury Sedan" vs. "Ferrari Sports Coupe". Once the tweaking is done, the tire then receives the OEM marking, a star for BMW, K1 for Ferrari, N ratings for Porsche, etc...

So now I have the car parked in the garage til the new meat gets here!!!

This is what I ahve done and it works like a charm.

Order the tires from Tirerack. They get shipped to home or office and you dont pay sales tax.

I call Discount tire Mobile tire install service. They show up to your home or office and install the tires, right at your home or office.

You can get some work done, chill at home watching TV or you can wait 2 hours while they do your tires at the store.

DONE AND DONE!

I've never heard of the mobile service. Do they balance the tires at your home with the Hunter Ride matching machine? How does this work? I can't find anything on their website about this.

Very interesting...

Never heard of the star insignia. Does anyone have a picture to share? Interesting stuff. I'm excited to wear my Contis out so I can join you boys with your PS2s. 5,400 miles down so I'm about halfway there.

Also, is tirerack the best way to go? I normally get my tires bought and fitted at the local 76 station.

YMMV. I've seen people replace their Conti's anywhere from 5K to 20K miles. I changed mine around 13K.

I got just about 30 on my Conti's but a lot of my miles are long drives on the Hwy during the week to go to work.
