Brake story continuing

As you may know I completly wore down the pads on front right side on a recent trackday at Lausitzring in Germany. Since there are no wear sensors on the right side it also resulted in damaged rotors (discs?).

I though all this happened because the pads got to warm and since you drive this track counter clock-wise and the fact that I often brake all the way to apex made the outside brake pads wear down much faster.

This may have had something to do with it but when the pads and disks on both sides front were replaced by warranty, it turned out the caliper were mounted wrong. They were mounted in a way so that they were not floating any more, hence couldn't transfer heat in the way they are designed to.

I am still not confident with using the stock pads so I am trying to locate yellow Pagid pads. If I can't find them before next track day (hopefully this year), I'll just the stock pads and see if it works better this time with a caliper that is floating as intended.

Cheers,
/Johan

Johan,

Just out of interest, why Pagid yellows and not blues?

I've just ordered some blues for the front (and fast road for the rear) and was warned off the yellows by the distributor.

droid42,

The yellows last longer and are also nicer to the discs.
The blue ones provides best braking power until they get too warm and they also eat a lot of discs as well as make noise when they are cold.

I am sure you will be happy with them.

Why did he warn you about them?

You know the Ring Taxi uses them, don't you?

Cheers,
/Johan

Johan,

The chap said that they're ceramic-based and not recommended for road use.

Let me know how you get on with them.

The saga continues.

The brake cooling channels were not opened by default.!
I wonder why?

Anyway my mechanic had them opened in less than one minute.
Also thinking about it, the calliper that was not floating anymore can have been faulty mounted by the mechaniv that changed to E30 M3 pads on the track, Don't know for sure.

So with open cooling channels the brake may very well last with the stock setup, that remains to be seen.

Cheers,
/Johan

Johan,

Regarding the cooling ducts ... I needed to be told this by the technician at my dealership AFTER my 1st track day. Grrr ...

However, they didn't make much of a different at Donington Park and my rear pads glazed badly

Out of interest, do you use Pagid pads on your M5? If so, do you know the part numbers?

Ian.

Ian, where do you get your Pagid pads from?

Thanks,

Wonder why the cooling ducts where covered?

I have Porsche 993 BiTurbo brakes in front on my M5 with standard Porsche pads. Have no problems at all with the brakes on the M5.

I'll try to locate part numbers for you.

Cheers,
/Johan

Johan,

I just got the part nos. from Pagid this afternoon so don't worry about that (thanks anyway).

Re: Pagid RS 19 Yellow ... be careful here ... apparently they're not approved by BMW for road use. If you used them over here in the UK you'd be driving uninsured. Not sure what the situation is in your neck of the woods.

droid42,

But are the RS 4-2 Blue pagids approved?

Don't think any of them are a problem here.

Cheers,

Yes, the blues are approved. The yellows aren't (the Pagid distributor was very clear on this point). I'll double-check with BMW UK but I'm sure this would apply to the whole of Europe (esp. with BMW being based in Germany, not the UK).

Ian,

Seems like I have to live with more noise and disc wear.
Changing disc more often will certainly be cheaper than being without insurance if I crash.

Let me know BMW says, please.

Cheers,
/Johan
