It turns the high beam on and off automatically depending on whether there are cars ahead both oncoming traffic as well as cars in front of you. It uses some sort of sensor ambient and directed light sensor to do this switching.

Technology in action. My Dad's 1955 Cadillac also had that but it was standard, not an option back then.

When my '06 arrived I spent about thirty minutes fiddling trying to find out how to turn HBA on and then spent about the same at the dealership with them trying the same. We all agreed that since it was in the manual and that because the sticker seemed to indicate it was on the car we must be doing something wrong not to be able to get it to engage. Finally BMWNA told us it wasn't on the car but would be available in summer of '06!

Same here. How dumb to put it in the manual.

HBA?

Flick it on, flick it off. If anyone pays for the HBA option, they are silly!

Most of the American top-end luxo-cruisers in the 1950s & 60s had the same function. On the Imperials the sensor was placed in a small cigar shaped cylinder, on top of a pylon, in the front center of the dash. Like a jet aircraft engine suspended below the wing except upside down. Much of what's new is actually old ideas recycled.
