#@%rrrgh windshield chip!!

Got chip in the windshield from a pebble today coming home from work!
Since I picked up my car May 30, 2007, I've gotten a flat tire, scuffed rim, and now chipped windshield! I hope that takes care of all the bad mojo for the rest of the lease...

Sorry about your luck man. I just had two small chips fixed on my previous car and you could barely notice. The guy gave me a discount as a firefighter since he's a retired cop, but you should still be able to find someone to fix it for less than $100 if you catch it before it spiders. I doubt my guy would go that far south in NJ, but I'm happy to PM you his name and number if you want it.

Ah, the joies of New Joisey...

I'm quite sure that at least 10% of those sentenced to a lifetime of hell on say, Devil's Island, if offered the chance, would opt for an alternative existence in New Jersey, given the chance. Hell of a thing.

You addressed my very next question...whether or not these small chips are repairable?

I believe that if the crack is smaller than a dollar bill, it's fixable.

They are repairable and you can barely notice it once done. You really have to look for it (speaking from experience on smaller chips).

And since I'm about to turn in a BMW leased car, I can tell you their policy is "cracks and stars outside the sweep of the windshield wipers are not charged" - as long as they are less than 1/4" in diameter. Within the sweep or greater than 1/4" and they expect you to get a new windshield.

I beg to differ my friend. I think 10% is being generous.

Same thing happened to me. I had a quarter size chip/star in my windshield. I could have had it repaired but seeing it in the middle of my windshield would bug me so I got a new one ($100 deductable). Good deal for me even though I'm giving the car back in Oct. This way there should be no lease-end issues, at least with the windshield

Did some research. Safelite Auto Glass (national chain which has a shop in my area) is able to safely repair cracks (up to 6 inches) and chips; and will guarantee the repair to pass lease returns. Online estimate for 1 repair on windshield is $60.
Whew, I feel much better now that I know that the damage can be repaired for a reasonable price. It's amazing how much angst I felt when the damage occurred, as if a close relative came down with some serious illness...You gotta love it

Nope, I don't have glass insurance. Actually, didn't even know that was available. I've never had an issue of chipped windshields in the past...Oh well, live and learn.
