B9 e24 Long Range fuel tanks

I have purchased a Long range reserve fuel tank for my e24 B9 does anyone have any experience of fitting or living with such and item in their cars.

Also i manage to get a rear e24 rubber boot spoiler from the same guy in California - (Not KSK) private buy ( mine had been vandalised.

Both items in their original Alpina Packaging having never been used, Lucky or what.:

Great find! Pretty unbelieveable, just imagine what other treasures could be lying out there waiting to be found.

I would imagine the longrange tank should be a pretty straightforward fit. Maybe consider painting/waxing or otherwise rustproofing it before fitting? I have heard several stories that the long range tanks served several purposes, including the obvious minimizing of fuel stops, but also full fuel tanks supposedly brought better balance to the car by transfering some more weight to the rear.

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't actually seen the tank as yet, its with a friend of mine in the US together with the spoiler - im just doing the groundwork before it arrives.

He describes it as about 4 inches thick and it fits between the rear suspension uprights in the boot (its Aluminium).

It should give me 110 Litres capacity up from 70 standard, as luck would have it my local garage sells original full lead 4 star, at their current price per Litre of 1 GBP that makes £110 per petrol stop if my maths is correct - Oh well we must suffer for our art.

All the best

Steve

P.S. any more info gratefully received.

Interesting... Would like to see pictures of the tank before/after installation...

/Kees

PS I think the idea with the additional tank is to drive to France or similar, get cheap fuel and drive back. So you could now give an economical reason as well to your wife for a good weekend drive...

Oops, sorry about that, hope this works. It is a much neater looking piece than the photo Jetboy posted. Mine was covered by the trunk carpeting. My experience with using it is not very positive due to an as yet undiagnosed problem. The fuel slops out at the first sniff of a corner, which would not have been a big deal had I not found out by filling it with 92 litres the night before I used it in a driving school at a local track! I had originally registered in my 98 M3 but sold that car 3 days before the school. The school was put on by Calgary BMW to give their customers a chance to explore the limits of their new cars, and the well-patinated B7 definitely raised a few eyebrows amongst all the new M3 and M5's on pit row. I felt like the barefoot, overall-wearing hillbilly cousin at a real so-fist-i-cat-ed wedding, or the winner of the ugliest prom date award! Other than a slight hiccup with the turbo which meant I couldn't really get my foot in it, the car was great fun to drive and amazingly precise for such a heavy car. The huge whoosh from the wastgate dumping boost at every shift made the car feel like a 935 on the Mulsanne Straight, although as this was my first school it was probably more like tooling around the paddock in a 935 with the handbrake partially engaged! I now have a tough decision as I have just acquired a 2002 which I intend to build into a vintage racer this winter. I'm not sure if I want to sit on the B7 for 1-1 1/2 years so I can work on the 2002 or if I should just sell it. It is a great car and has terrific presence, but a 160hp 2002 would also be alot of fun. I'm still undecided. If it went though, then I would have space for the early 70's AMC Pacer LTD with the V8 engine that I saw earlier tonight. Two-tone beige with white outside and real beige leatherette in, I could tape on a chest toupee and pretend I was Roger Moore in "The Man with the Golden Gun". For some reason I just can't get those beige painted mags out of my head...
