AlpinaBlau Metallic Codes

Alpina Blue came in different flavors from BMW, depending on the production timeframe.

For the Alpina B12 5.0/5.7 coupe, Alpina used the following blues from BMW for their vehicles:
  • BLAU METALLIC (FE 86-5489)
  • ALPINA BLAU METALLIC II (FQ 95-3965) - 5.7 only
  • MAURITIUSBLAU METALLIC (287)
  • NACHTBLAU METALLIC (FE 68-51AX)
There are other shades of purple and blue, but for this discussion, it's "blue" that matters here.

Because "AlpinaBlau" was used from different BMW colors, it's important to know which color Alpina ordered from the BMW factory for the Alpina vehicle and/or if Alpina repainted the car.

As M5 Killer correctly points out, there were different shades of AlpinaBlau.

Cheers,

Jud

Hey Jud,

Welcome to the Board! I think most 8 Series owners have heard of you. I hope your search for a B12 5.7 Coupe will be succesful.

Wow, so much discussion while I've been away. I got the Alpina part numbers for the paint from Alpina, but it doesn't help much.
1 kg tin (part number: 07 59 023)
ALPINA-blue-touch up stick (part number: 07 59 019)
So these are for -90 B12 5.0 (E32).

I finally got the color code from BMW:
BASF FE 5489
Now there seems to be at least two variants:
FE95-5489 and FE97-5489

So how can I know which is the right one? And how are these BASF/Glasurit codes mapped to e.g. Standox system?

The switch to Alpinablau Metallic II took place around the mid-90's, so your E32 B12 5.0 should be Alpinablau Metallic.

Ok. Thanks. Jud mentioned another shade of Alpinablau: BLAU METALLIC (FE 86-5489). Do you know when this color was used?

It almost looks like the year code is embedded into the paint code: FEyy-5489 where yy is the year from where it is valid?

That's what I was thinking as well. I know that mid-1980's there seemed to be color shift. The early Saphireblau Metallic color on the E12's had a much more pale-grey hue than the Alpinablau Metallic color on the E28's. And there was definitely a shift to an even more blue hue on the E39's.

Just building on that - are we looking at the following?

1979-1985 Saphireblau Metallic BASF colorcode ??
1986-1994 Blau Metallic (also known as Dunkelsaphireblau Metallic?) BASF colorcode FE 86-5489
1995-1997 Alpinablau Metallic II BASF colorcode FE 95-5489 (is this also FQ 95-3965 )
1997-> Alpinablau Metallic III(?) BASF colorcode FE 97-5489

The coding by the year would make sense. According to BASF
DUNKELSAPHIRBLAU MET 1985-1989
FE95-5489 (ALPINBLAU MET) 1993-1993
FE97-5489 (ALPINEBLAU) 1993-1997

BASF doesn't recognize FE86-5489

So my quess would be that FE97-5489 is Alpinablau Metallic II.

Maybe I just should bite the bullet and buy the paint directly from Alpina. But I'm a bit confused about the Alpina part number. They say that I should use 07 59 023. I thought (based on our discussion here) that the color would have been 07 59 016 (dunkelsaphirblau). I've always thought that dunkelsaphirblau is the same as alpinablau I.
