How many rpm's for an B3 3.0??

Hi,

Yesterday I was talking with a friend about my Alpina and he asked me about the max. rpm of my B3 3.0.
Then I started to think about it. According to my rpm meter (or how is thing called) my max. is 7000 rpm. And when I pull away at the top it goes all the way in the red untill the 7000rpm (don't worry...don't do it often )
Isn't it normal that there is always a "reserve" in the max. rpm?? shouldn't it normally go till lets say 6500 max or so??

I thought only when the chip is tuned the rpm goes all the way or atleast almost to the top??

Any help would be appreciated

thanks
Pierre

ps: yesterday I drove a new M3....damn....one fast m@#$f&%#
