Post B10 BiTurbo - the fastest accellerating BMW of all times ?

Hello,

I wonder if the B10 BiTurbo is really the fastest car of BMW and derived cars in terms of accelleration 0-100 km/h ?

In different sources I saw different figures: B10 BiTurbo manual says 5.6 sec., mags give 5.2.

Anyway it seems even faster accellerator than than B12 5.7 Coupe (5.8 sec) which is considered as a champ in max speed achieved.

Did anybody do any instrumental measurements of own Alpina's accelleration times? B10 BiTurbo's one?

Regards,
Igor

I find it a bit confusing as well, BMW quote a 0-100kmh time of 5.5 secs for the E36 Evo M3 in their brochures at the time. Where as mags seem to fall either side of manufacturers times, weather conditions and the car used at the time make the difference I suppose.

I have had the chance to drive against one on the autobahn in my B8 4.6 Coupe, and there was virtually no difference. Up to 280 km/h there was less than one carlength difference between us (we were in each our lane!). Sometimes the B8 would be ahead, other times the B10. It seemed to depend on gearshifts.

I read an article comparing the Audi TT with the M coupe, and they stated that the M would accelerate to 100kmh in 4.8 secs.

Hi

The M Coupe is NOT cabable to do 0-100 kph in 4,8 sec at least not in stock version.
If you have a good engine and have 110 % hit on your start you could achieve low 5 but I dont think sub 5 is posible for this car...

B8 Guru

Did you manage to stay with the Bi Turbo with your B8, Im impressed !!! Your B8 must be a very healthy one
Looking on the numbers the B8 have a tested topspeed of app 278 khp, Bi Turbo app 292 kph.
Since it ( Bi Turbo) reach higher top speed, even with the higher air-resitance and also got more torque it should be able to leave the B8 behind in acc.
If I look at the numbers on the B7 Coupe its cabable of 270 kph( test by AMS ) and 0-200 in 21 sec ( also seen 19,7 sec) more or less the same as the M3 3.2 and 850 CSI but the B7 is much faster than those two cars.
SO I guess the the 330 claimed Hp from ALPINA on our car is very much alive. Any way the ALPINA cars are very fast indeed.
Imaging having, the B12 5,7 Coupe for long distance travel, the B10 V8 Touring for Family trips and the 3,0 CSL ALPINA B2S for pure and simple enjoyment and the ALPINA 2002 Ti A2S for real crazy kamikaze fun.....

I had my doubts on the performance references made by this magazine, but it still came out head and shoulders above the Audi TT.

Andy

I have a friend with an Audi TT Quatro 225 hp, I smoke him so bad its not even a contest

B8

My figures is based on a test made by AMS 30.06.95 where it "competet against an Porsche 911 Carrera 272 hp.
The car was an Coupe with rear spoiler and the top speed was 278 khp, 0-100 5,7, 0-200 20,2 0-1 km 24,9 sek. But I also remember a test made by Sport auto where they got 282 kph in a 4 door car.( I think)

Some numbers from the same magasine a few years earlier.(Numbers form 2 different tests)
B7 Coupe/1 0-100 6,1 (5,7)sek, 0-200 21(19,7) sek. topspeed 270
B7/1 0-100 6,1 0-200 21,7 ( xxx) topspeed 266 kph.
The speedo of my B7 is of by 6 kph at 240 and it reach 295 kph + few if the road had been longer

This numbers is from my memory so I am only 99.9% sure they are 99.9% correct.

BTW did you know that the biggest Swedish car magazine "Teknikens Vard" tested a B7/1 and managed 0-100 on 4,8 sek !!!!!!!!!!!
0-200 17,? sek, thats is unbeliably fast for this car...

Some Bi Turbo owners also claim to have reached 330-340 on the tacho, thats a"bit" optimistic but 300 + kph real speed is realistic.
Never drove an B8 but it has been on my short list on my last wishlists for a new car.
I actually had a B8 once but that was based on the old 5 series ( E12).
Is your coupe faster than your Touring ??

Concerning your challenge on Rudskogen, your on my friend The B7 is getting a into its retireing age so I dont think we are going to race it this track, its to twisty for the gearing of the car. It goes like hell on the straight but the curves are to slow. Would be quite nice for your car, so I have to take your challenge in my M Coupe instead Ok ???

Maybe we can arange a test form 100-250 on the freeway instead, if you beat the B7 I bye you a beer...

Erik

This is going to be fun!

B8 Guru and I raced from 0-265 km/h (on the tacho) from standstill on the Autobahn (with my M3 3,2 Limo, then it had 40 000 km on it) in the middle of the night. It was a weird experience standing still in each lane on the autobahn seeing lights approaching from behind far away. You could say that was also a motivation to floor it

Also, the B8 was ahead two-three carlenths (correct Michael?) up to 100 km/h, then it was even acceleration until my speedlimiter kicked in. The B8 continues It will be interesting to see what the B8 Touring will manage this late March!

Also, in the "Alpina Chronik" big, big book in German it says that Auto Bild or was it Auto Zeiting (I don't remember the name, but one of those cheaper German car mags but in any case reliable) that had tested a B8 Touring that had a topspeed of 290 km/h! Impressive!

In the same book, Burhard Bovensiepn is quoted saying " The B6 3,5 isn't a car for people that are around 20 years old" because of it's tail happiness. When I had the B6 3,5 I was 22. Uh-oh, but I managed without crashing it. Except a 160+ km/h encounter with the right rearviewmirror against a trucktaking up all lanes. That was scary!

Gustav: The magazine that tested the B8 Touring was Auto-Zeitung. They managed 290 or 291km/h...really impressive.

Erik: The B7 E28 in Teknikens Värld was unbelievably fast. Another Swedish magazine, Automobil, had a feature about Alpina when the testdrove a B7 Coupe and after that they tried the same B7 E28 as in Teknikens Värld. They said it was soo much faster. But that car wasn´t completely original, I think...

Hi Erik,

I don't know which test you have been looking at but the B8 4.6 Coupe is specified at 282 km/h in the fahrzeugbrief and "over 280km/h" in the datasheet, and those numbers are conservative ratings guaranteed by ALPINA. I have seen the speedo needle 15-20 km/h past the 300km/h line.
ALPINA specified "over 290 km/h" for the B10 Biturbo. I don't recall what the exact figure in the Fahrzeugbrief is.

I asked other people (B10 Biturbo owners) in the German ALPINA Gemeinschaft about this and they confirmed that the two cars are equally fast in a straight line.

One of them couldn't shake a B8 off his tail at any speed on the autobahn. And his turbos are new, as well as the exhaust system.

My Coupe doesn't have rear spoiler as probably the only B8 Coupe in existence (it was standard equipment) and this helps top speed, but a standard B8 should be equally fast as a B10 Biturbo. Contrary to what ALPINA says the rear spoiler is not needed on the B8 for high speed stability. But the front spoiler is!

The ALPINA specification for the standing kilometre (0-1000m) for the B8 4.6 Coupe is 24.7 seconds.
For the B10 Biturbo it is 24.9 seconds.
For the B7 Coupe (1982) it is 26.8 seconds
For the B7 Coupe (1983) it is 24.9 seconds

ALPINA specified the topspeed for the B7 Turbo Coupe as "over 250 km/h" in 1982 and "260 km/h" in 1983.

I don't know if my B8 Coupe is a particularly healthy example, but as you may know ALPINA programmed the Motronic ECU individually for each car which means a certain spread in power output. Most B8's have around 340-350 PS with a few ones reaching 360PS.

I have never raced against a B7, but maybe we can try that out at Rudskogen in May?

Michael
