B 10 Bi-Turbo upgrade
I have looked around for information on the best way to get more power out of the Bi-Turbo engine. What's the best pair of turbo's to put on this car if you are planning to replace them? (10 years have passed since the engine first appeared. I would think that there are even better turbo's out there, and even more power to be had out of that great six!)Any ideas where to look for improved power and torque?
Thanks

... I have seen on one of the (unofficial) Alpina web pages that the Biturbo "can be easily chipped to 440 bhp". However, it doesn't state which chip/where to obtain it etc. I also agree with you that technology will have moved on, so therefore there may be something better on the market with regard to replacement turbos. You could always try a brace of hybrid turbos/cut back compressor blades etc. Have you approached Alpina themselves?
Regards,
Neil

Ryan,
The web page I saw the chip tuning comment on is:
http://www.bmwm5.com/biturbo.htm
It is the Unofficial Alpina B10 Biturbo Homepage.

Neil

... I currently have a Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 1 and am replacing the turbo on it. The latest (but expensive) technology in turbocharging is roller bearings. They allow the turbo to spin up very quickly with virtually no lag - they are also more efficient - both of which compute to more power/power cutting in further down the rev range etc. I believe Garrett pioneered this. This would be a good way to go with replacing the turbos on your Biturbo. In addition, you could consider a hybrid turbo (different compressor) with roller bearings - now that will see a vast improvement in the volume of air being pumped into the cylinders.
Regards,
Neil

Thanks for the info Neil. I don't own a B-10, but I had condsidered one. Since most of the ones I've seen have over 100,000Km, I would imagine that some work would have to be done to the engine, wether it be turbo's or the entire engine.
I was just curious about upgrading the turbo's and trying to get that claimed 440hp. (That's pretty awesome! I wonder how much torque that thing puts out?)
Thanks again,
Ryan

Neil,
I noticed that you are in the U.K., do you have any experience with the Lotus Carlton/Omega. That car seems like a rocket, but any other information is hard to come by, especially being in the U.S. (where we don't get any of the good Euro cars seen in the late 80's and early 90's.)
Thanks in advance

Hi there!
I have an alpina b10biturbo myself.
My uppgrades: T25 with t28 compressors, boost chip(programmed by me),Fuel and timing chip(prgrammed by me and a friend who is a chiptuner in sweden),Bigger injection valves(from saab trionic),HKS sqv,new cylinder head with special porting.
My boost is 1.4 bar, i have not run it on a dyno yet too see how many bhp i have but i think it about 450-500.
Too chiptune your car too 440bhp with only a chip is not to recomend. All the b10biturbo cars has 300cc injection valves, that is too small even for original 0,8 bar boost, the are all going too warm! the turbos, exhaust manifolds and even the cylinderhead craks in the cobustion chamber if you have bad luck like me.You can rise your boost to 1.0bar
with a chip and low timing,or with a progressive fuelpressure regulator.

What i read here makes me mad. one of my best friends is THE guy at ALPINA who developes all the engine parts on the dyno since 25 years. It is NOT possible to increase the HP of the B10 Biturbo with a dramatic loss of reliability and life time of the engine (parts). This car is in good condition 290 km/h fast. WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE OUT OF THIS BODY AND BRAKE? I´m very sorry but this discussion is STUPID nothing else.

Chris,
I was looking on the unofficial website for Alpina, and at the top of the page is a sentence stating that the car can be "easily" tuned to 440hp.
This is a message board and I thought it would be interesting to see if that type of upgrade is possible, So I thought I would ask some of the other owners.
***I find your information and troubleshooting on the M5 to be incredibly helpful, and I think you are by far the most knowledgeable source of information on the E34 M5.
I just wanted to see if the Alpina could possibly still challenge the "new kids" around town.

Dear Ryan,
Sorry for delay in reply - been off-line for months.
Yes, I do have some knowledge about the Lotus Carlton (Omega outside the UK). I've got a photocopied Vauxhall brochure on the car.
The car had/has no traction control and so can be a bit hairy, it has 377 bhp and a max speed of 177 mph.
At least one road test report has been written pitting the Lotus Carlton against the Alpina B10 Biturbo - and the Biturbo came out tops! Then again, it does depend upon the subjectivity of the journalists writing the report.
Have a look at:
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~mjp/lotus/

Neil

Neil,
Thanks for the info on the Carlton. I was always interested in this car but could never find any info on it.
Thanks again,

ryan,
i've spoken to one owner in the uk who has had his bitubo remapped. he doesn't know the exact bhp uplift but tells me that torque is up considerably. I have a biturbo which is advertised in here for sale - but if i decide to keep it, then i will probably also persue this route....
cheers,
m
