The best possible tyres for the B8

Hi guys,

I am very near the legal limit for my tyres and i would like to buy some new ones.

Should i continue with Michelins (I am having trouble sourcing the 265/35 17s by the way)

Tyre tech. must have come on a long way since 1995 and i was wondering if there was a better tyre to use?

Thanks very much
all the best
adam

I'm still happy with the Michelin especially after the change from the MXX3 to the Pilot Sport. As far as I know (I think Mill checked this out once before) only Michelin builds the 265/35 17. All others will probably have a 255 in their program. Seems to be an uncommon size.

Cheers, Alex

Mill...didn´t you have a problem with the ABS lamp flashing all the time when your 255 rear tires where new? Asking because the increased wheel diameter of nearly 2 cm compared to the original 265/35

Re: The best possible tyres for the B8

I just checked tirerack.com which is usually a pretty good source for tyre information and they have no tyres available in stock at all in 265/35/17.

I guess you may have to go to a slightly different size if you cannot get any, such as the more common 265/40/17 or 255/40/17.

35 is a very unusual profile for a 17.

the only problem was, while they were brand new and had miserable traction and handling, but after a few 100 kms they are excellent.

I'm running 18x8.5" (235/40 and 255/35)

Re: The best possible tyres for the B8

adam there are just 6 major tire manufacturers which products i would use on such kind of cars:

michelin, dunlop, continental, bridgestone, pirelli and goodyear.

265/35 17 is a very uncommon size. can you drive other dimensions? and which size do you need for the front tyres?

in general the michelin PS2 is the best overall dry performer. also for track driving. in most cases he is the fastest. but not as good in the wet as the dunlop. the dunlop sport 9000 is meanwhile an old tyre. they just made the dunlop sp sport maxx which is a lot better in the dry than the 9000er. the bridgestone s-03 is also an old tyre. the RE050a is the newest high performance tyre from bridgestone. very good in the dry (not as good as the michelin) und also good in the wet. everything is above averrage without big compromises. the continental sport contact is nearly as good as the RE050a. very balanced. goodyear also made a new tyre, which unfortunately i don't know very well. so i cannot tell you anything about it. and pirelli has its p zero rosso. also a good tyre. but i don't like pirelli.

if i were you i would take the michelin ps2 at first, than the bridgestone and dunlop at second or at two and a half the continental. but your biggest problem seems to find tyres in your size. i just found the old michelin ps in 265/35 17 which is a completely other tyre than the ps2.

good luck and maybe you can use other dimensions so you get more choices...

Re: The best possible tyres for the B8

Adam,

I'm also out shopping for new tires. I'm buying the Michelin PilotSport 265/35/17 for the rear. You should expect to pay about euro 405 a piece.

regards,

peter
