2800 km with the B7 in 6 days

      Hi guys

Thougt I should share the experience with you.

I just came back from a visit in Germany and decided to use the B7 for the trip.

      Some statistics

      2800 km
      average fuel consumption: 14,5ltr/100km
      Oil consumption: not noticable
average speed: 130 kph in Germany, less in Sweden.
      2 winns
      1 showoff
      0 loss.

I left from Kiel in the morning and drove onto A7 going south.
I had the camcorder mounted in the rear window and the remote in the from seat just in case I found anyting fun.
Last time I was in Germany with the B7 I blew the head gasket on my way home so I was a little nervours about going flat out but if something came I just had to be prepared for a little push.

But NOTHING and I mean NOTHING was even remotly fun to play with. Only fast diesels and small not that fast things was on the road that morning.

Just after Kassel I noticed an old E32 750 ( I think) on my tail and then he slowly moved up on my right side wawing to me and giving me the thumbs up, by the way he was jumping up and down in his car I take it he was an ALPINA fan and liked the old B7.
(It reminded me about the time we picked up the car at ALPINA in 1984 and we had a dutch guy filming the B7 thrue his sunroof for 20 minutes during some heavy traffic)

He ended up at my rear and I though OK he was a nice guy, why not show him how the B7 runs.......... The road opened up I floored it.
At app 250-260 kph I let of and he was gone.

After rolling down a step hil I should then apply some throttle to get up the hill at the other siden and then .....BOM..... and then nothing but black smoke out my rear.
The E32 passed me with a suprised look on his face and I had to stop.
Not nice to stop on the autobahn with a lot of traffic. The problem was easy to fix, it was the rubber hose from the intercooler the popped of. I put in on and started up again.
After a few km it fell of again and I had to stop at a very scary place. It was on a roadconstruction and only 2 lanes in a uphill right corner.
On with the hose and down with the turbo pressure so it would not happend again.

In Mannheim I got a new " thing" to fix it and then it was OK.

On my way home I took it easy just incase anything else happend, I also had a German friend with me that I did not want to scare to much. I also had huge brake problems with vibrations you will not belive between 110 kph and down thrue 85 kph.
It was almost impossible to hold the sterring wheel. The solution..... no braking thrue that speed, this solution did create some funny situations for my German friend.

As we got closer to Kiel without anything remotly funny happend I suddenly noticed a Porsche 944 going at it against an E36 Bimmer of some kind and beat it quite brutaly.
It was accelerating thrue 230 kph so easily without noticing me app 150 meters behind him. I closed the gap when he had to break for some slow traffic and prepared 4 gear at app 180 kph and waited for the slow car to move over......... I then discovered the TURBO label at his tail..........
It was alittle dark so I guess he had no idea of what he had at his tail. Well he was soon to find out, he floored and so did I and the result was , well it was a clear victory. No more no less. He looked a bit supprised I do not think he expected that from an old Bimmer.

I hit 265 kph before I let off and he took what your US guys call a "ricer flyby".......

The next day we got to sweden and was crusing at 140 kph when I suddenly noticed a E36 Coupe body in front of me. When I got closer I noticed it was a beutifull E36 M3 looked like a very late model. I folowed him closely during some passing manouvers and was hoping he would play. but no......... He just looket at me and smiled.

On my way home a few days later I ended up behind a SUPRA Turbo 3.0 early 90 model I think, not the same as the Twin turbo things.

He was willing to play, he floored it a few times in front of me and it was noicy and not slow.
We ended up side by side at the light and I decided to prepare for a 100% start ( this I normaly never does) At the same time the light turned green and fellt like he was not going to go at it so I just left semi fast and keept my eyes on him in the mirror.
And there he comes,....... I imidialty floored it and he never managed to get close to me, he got smaller and smaller and ........ you get the picture.
I let off and then he comes flying passt me I let him go.
I pass him once more a little later and he again try to follow without any luck, and pass me at WOT when I slow down.
I have no idea if this car was modded or not, it was not even close to the B7 so I guess it must have been almost stock.

This is what I got this time and now the B7 will be put in his garage for the winter........

Lovely story Erik! It saddens me that there are now fun cars down in Germany on the autobahn Maybe better down in Bavaria?

B8 Guru (who know has moved to Florida) also said that it was clearly noticable the down economy in Germany and the last thing people would buy is a fast car, people save up and hope for better times.

Glad you managed to fix the car on Autobahn without being overun¨, I can imagine to stop at a construction zone. Scary.

You should have stopped by Sthlm to see the new 6-series although maybe you already seen it in Germany.

Thanks again for a great story, seems like you have to do 2500 km more around southern parts of Germany to have some fun!

      BRAVO !!!

      Excellent story!!
Sounds like you had a great time lying in wait for the next unsuspecting challenger.
Just getting to know my 84 B7 coupe and I am a bit intimidated as of yet to the acceleration of this car! But I am getting use to it more and more.
