catalytic converter question

Hi, I had the BMW dealership look at a rattle under my car, they said the inner part of the catalytic converter is separating from the outer shell. It looks like my only option is to replace it, their price is 1400 GBP. Is there any other place to get the catalytic converter for a 1993 B3 3.0 for less money? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't it be, how is it called in English, welded?! I had I think the same problem on my old E30 and it survived at least two years.

In the UK it might be quite acceptable to replace your catalytic converter with a testpipe. That would save you quite some cash, give a bit more horsepower, however at the risk of damaging the environment a bit more.
