You will hit wind resistance and that will limit your top speed, not lack of gear with a 3.23.

From experience the 2.79 is rev-limited, the 2.93 runs into wind resistance at more or less the same topspeed and the 3.15 already limits top speed.

On a different note - making significant modifications doesn't necessarily make sense on a mint-condition very limited production car.
Why not enjoy the B8 first as you bought it and gain experience with that?
I don't really understand the need to start modifying it even though you've only driven a few hundred km.
There's very few people in the world with significant driving experience in a stock B8 4.0...

Top speed on stock 4.0 version?

I may be wrong about wind resistance for a 4.6 version. But my math is sound I believe for our OP.

To be honest I was eyeballing this with an assumed redline of 7000, forgot they stop spinning at 6200.

redline 6200, .83 6th, 3.23 and 265/35 on 17's......

Stated top speed for 4.6 is published 175, the math at redline above allows for 165 mph.....can a 4.0 really hit that with stock diff?

My opinion is that 165 top speed is not limiting for this car.

But, as always, YMMV!

Touché

Hmmm

Kees must know, he's the "master" of this trivia it seems....

Not surprised you like the 3.15 LSD. Such a common diff too, its a no brainer.

(Now put a search in on fleabay to find the slightly more elusive 3.38 LSD in a 188 medium case! Also BFC has a lot of E36 traffic)

ehehhehehe

I'm still insanely jealous over what you're driving..... and hard at work to make the S62 drop into my E36 with as many stock BMW parts as possible, but not having to purchase the beautifully executed but made of nearly unobtainium Alipina bits....

i stongly considered a 3.38 from the auto m3 but after driving the b8 with the 3.15 i really do think the 3.38 might be a bit short . alex if anyone can figure out how to put a s62 into a e36 and not have to use the alpina parts its u
